Willie mullins

Willie Mullins has been top trainer at the Cheltenham Festival for the past six years, and he's long odds-on to do it all over again.

Can he be stopped this year? I've taken a look at Betfred's Cheltenham Festival Top Trainer Odds - paying particular attention to the without Willie Mullins market.

Cheltenham Festival Top Trainer Odds

  • Willie Mullins @ 1/8
  • Gordon Elliott @ 15/2
  • Nicky Henderson @ 10/1
  • Gavin Cromwell @ 25/1
  • Dan Skelton @ 33/1
  • Henry de Bromhead @ 50/1
  • Paul Nicholls @ 125/1

It's no surprise that Willie Mullins, the most successful trainer in Cheltenham Festival history, is as short as 1/8 to be this year's top trainer.

The Closutton maestro - responsible for 10 of the 28 favourites across the week - has already earned that title 11 times before and as the odds suggest, it's hard to imagine him not extending the tally to 12.

Mullins' Irish counterpart Gordon Elliott is next in the betting at 15/2.

The 47-year-old also sends a battalion over to the Cotswolds, including Brighterdaysahead in the Champion Hurdle and Stayers' Hurdle champ Teahupoo.

He's got it all to do to beat Mullins, though, so if you fancy the Cullentra handler to have a good Festival, my advice is to play 11/8 in the Top Trainer Without Willie Mullins market.

As far as I'm concerned, Nicky Henderson - 10/1 in the 'normal' market - stands out at 15/8 excluding the favourite.

In Constitution Hill (Champion Hurdle), Jonbon (Champion Chase) and Lulamba (Triumph Hurdle), he's got some outstanding chances as he bids to put last year's nightmare behind him. Don't forget the likes of Lucky Place in the Stayers or Jeriko Du Reponet in the Pertemps too.

Although he doesn't have the firepower of the Honeysuckle, A Plus Tard and Minella Indo days, you can never rule out Henry de Bromhead on this stage. He turns up year after year and 14/1 without Mullins isn't to be sniffed at.

Likewise, what about Dan Skelton? The Warwickshire-based trainer enjoyed his best Cheltenham Festival to date last year, saddling four winners, and has his fair share of fancied horses again this year.

Skelton is 33/1 at Betfred to be top trainer but again, he's more interesting in the alternative market.

Paul Nicholls, as brilliant a horseman he is, is hard to fancy in either market - but Gavin Cromwell (25/1 - Top Trainer, 4/1 - Top Trainer Without Willie Mullins) is enjoying a superb season and might be the one going a little under the radar.
