Chelmsford Tips: Profitman can pay off

There are six meetings across Britain and Ireland on Thursday on another busy day of racing action. We are focused on the evening fare on the Polytrack at Chelmsford, where there are eight races from 16:35 to 20:15.
Our Chelmsford tips include Profitman for Ben Brookhouse as he attempts to go one better after a near-miss at the track late last month.
Chelmsford Tips - Thursday, October 17
16:35 – Devil's Advocate @ 1/2
The card begins with a maiden for two-year-olds over 1m2f and it represents a winnable opportunity for DEVIL'S ADVOCATE in the Godolphin blue for John and Thady Gosden.
The Too Darn Hot colt posted a third-place finish on his debut at Newmarket (1m, good to soft) last month, leaving plenty of room for progress.
He was too keen early, got outpaced and then became unbalanced in the Rowley Mile dip when attempting to make a challenge.
There were signs of greenness as he chased home the front pair in the market, while drawing 12 lengths clear of the remainder.
Robert Havlin's partner should have learned plenty in that outing and this longer trip can help. With normal improvement from his debut, he should be hard to stop.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
18:15 – Profitman @ 11/8
Ben Brookhouse looks to have found a good opening for dual all-weather winner PROFITMAN in the 7f Class 6 handicap at Chelmsford.
The three-year-old won at Wolverhampton and here over course and distance in the spring and has been inching down the ratings in four runs since returning from a three-month layoff.
The best effort of the four came over course and distance 19 days ago when he made a mid-race move to be handy and got to the lead with a furlong to run, only to be headed late on by the favourite, Twitch, and losing out by a neck.
Had the photo gone his way, he'd be 2-2 here over this 7f trip. Having been nudged up just 1lb, and with Sean Dylan Bowen claiming 3lb, he has excellent claims back at the Essex track.

19:45 – Lion's House @ 13/2
The penultimate contest on the card is a 6f handicap and it may pay to side with LION'S HOUSE for trainer Roger Varian on his second run back from a layoff.
The son of Oasis Dream won both starts in 2023 as a juvenile, landing maiden/novice contests at Newcastle and Wolverhampton over this 6f trip in November and December.
We didn't see him again for 301 days until his comeback at Wolverhampton this month off an opening handicap mark of 85.
He was entitled to need that run and shaped with some promise in finishing just behind the principals in a race where the gambled-on Aramram finished well to win.
This three-year-old should be sharper now, takes a drop in class and is rated 1lb lower. On just his fourth start, he has plenty of room for progress.
This is an Extra Place Race so Betfred will be paying 4 Places (1/5 Odds) instead of 3.
