Chambard Grand National Odds 2024: There are worse outsiders in the field

Chambard heads into the 2024 Aintree Grand National as one of only two 12-year-olds in the field. Will that matter or will his penchant for showing up in the big races play out and we get a big-priced winner?

Any time you get a Cheltenham Festival winner and a Becher winner at such a big price, you have to wonder what exactly is going on. But age is certainly not on the side of the Venetia Williams-trained Chambard.

The victory in the Kim Muir as a 40/1 shot back in 2022 was one of the surprises of the Festival, despite the horse having won or finished second in every race he competed in that season.

That was followed up by a very impressive race in the Becher just last December over these Grand National fences as ,despite being an 18/1 shot, he dominated the race and beat Coko Beach by a big margin, coming home 13 lengths ahead of the second-placed horse. History was also made that day as Lucy Turner became the first female jockey to win the race.

Since then though, two poor runs (albeit both on heavy ground) saw Chambard finish an average of 36-and-a-half lengths behind the leader, maybe age is finally catching up to him but recent form has certainly been trending heavily in the wrong direction.

There is clearly some class there as you don’t win a big race at Aintree and at the Cheltenham Festival without being a good horse, but this may well be a step too far.
