Another horse set to take part in his second Aintree Grand National is Capodanno. The eight-year-old for Willie Mullins is certainly an each-way prospect and has looked good in recent runs.

It may be a bit of a surprise that Willie Mullins has only tasted victory once at the Aintree Grand National, and that was back in 2005 when Hedgehunter won as a 7/1 favourite with Ruby Walsh aboard. The 17-time Irish National Hunt Champion Trainer has over 100 Cheltenham Festival winners on his resume but just the one in the big race up at Aintree. Is Capodanno the horse to buck that run of bad luck in this one?

As per usual, he’ll have several runners on the start line and this one is his top-rated according to the handicapper. Most pundits really stood up and took notice when he came home third as the outright 80/1 outsider in the Savills Chase over at Leopardstown at the end of 2023.

He didn’t jump with fluency but showed plenty of heart and stamina to place. Capodanno followed that up by winning in the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham, keeping on well and once again showing those who follow the sport closely that this horse has everything he needs to go the full Grand National distance.

The soft ground at the Festival was a real challenge but a fourth-place finish in the Ryanair Chase was not a poor performance, once more he was still running well when he crossed the line. So it would be fair to say that stamina will not be a problem, his jumping ability though still has minor question marks heading into the Grand National. Very much an each-way prospect however.
