Brighton Tips: Donkey can dash to victory on the south coast

Brighton Racecourse

We have a busy Monday on our hands with six meetings taking place across the UK and Ireland. There’s a little something for everyone with five Flat meetings and one National Hunt fixture.

This includes Brighton’s six-race Flat card which goes from 14:30-17:00 on ground which is likely to be good, good to firm in places. In my Brighton tips are three strong selections at the south coast track which, I believe, are worth considering.

Brighton Tips - Monday, June 3

  • 15:30 – Dashing Donkey @ 7/2
  • 16:00 – On The Cards @ 3/1
  • 16:30 – Oh So Audacious @ 7/4

15:30 – Dashing Donkey @ 7/2

This three-year-old handicap has several thoroughly unexposed types that are of interest including last-time-out winner Blenheim Star, who carries a 6lb penalty. Gary & Josh Moore’s Red Cloud took a huge step forward on handicap debut last time and he also has to be considered.

It’s William Stone’s DASHING DONKEY that gets the nod however, following an encouraging latest effort. He showed very little in three starts in maiden and novice company, although the form of his distant third behind 2000 Guineas flop Night Raider looks reasonable in the context of this race.

The switch to handicaps has clearly helped though, as he came within a short head of getting off the mark on his first start in this sphere at Yarmouth in April.

Amerigo Vespucci, who is in opposition once again here, got the better of him that day but Dashing Donkey is expected to progress once again and should turn the tables if doing so.

It surely won’t be long before he gets off the mark and it will be no surprise if he comes out on top here.

16:00 – On The Cards @ 3/1

Unexposed and lightly raced handicappers could be the theme of the day at Brighton and Marcus Tregoning’s ON THE CARDS also perfectly fits into that profile. His five rivals are thoroughly exposed but fellow four-year-old Twilight Guest is the one who could have more to give if any.

On The Cards was only beaten by a head when runner-up on his second start at Lingfield in November and the winner was in receipt of 1lb that day. Judging by the fact that his conqueror is currently rated 81, it’s very easy to make the case that Tregoning’s gelding is well handicapped off a mark of only 67 here.

He finished third on his handicap debut in a better race at Bath last time out and the handicapper has subsequently dropped him 1lb. This is a cracking opportunity to gain a first career victory on just his second run in handicap company and it’ll be disappointing if he doesn’t do the business.

16:30 – Oh So Audacious @ 7/4

This race has some very specific conditions and there certainly isn’t an abundance of quality on offer. There is one standout contender that should prove very hard to beat in this company, though, in the form of Harry Eustace’s OH SO AUDACIOUS, who has already won twice and can add another to her tally here.

The daughter of Mukhadram was a winner over course and distance as recently as September and her current mark is just 1lb higher.

Lightly raced four-year-old Prefer The Sister is likely to provide the stiffest competition but it’ll require some performance to topple our selection as she will be giving 15lb to Oh So Audacious.
