Bravemansgame Grand National Odds 2025: One last hurrah on the cards?

Usually when Paul Nicholls rocks up to a big race, you expect to see a genuine contender among the favourites. That won’t be the case on Saturday, but if he is to pull off the upset his most likely chance is with Kandoo Kid or the horse we are going to talk about here - Bravemansgame.

Considering we’ve been watching Bravemansgame in top-quality races for the best part of three years now, it might come as a bit of a surprise that this 10-year-old last crossed the finishing post first on Boxing Day in 2022. Now, of course that win was in the King George VI, which is usually a sign of very good things to come.

Since that impressive performance that seemed to signal a budding star was on our hands, this horse has placed no fewer than seven times but has failed to record a victory. On paper, that seems promising for an each-way play but do the numbers hide a declining horse who is best to avoid?

A lot goes back a couple of months to the Denman Chase at Newbury. A lot of smart money was on Bravemansgame bouncing back and proving to everyone that he’s showing signs of returning to the sort of performance that we’d come to expect. But in finishing third - 10 lengths behind winner Djelo and six-and-a-half lengths behind stablemate Hitman - it induces a sharp intake of breath about whether he has a serious chance of winning the Grand National.

Back in 2023, he tried to defend his King George VI title and gamely finished second behind the impressive Hewick, but then in 2024 Bravemansgame wasn’t in it at all, ended up eighth of nine finishers. That was troublesome, and his season to date has been one of a horse who is attracting betting interest based on who he was three years ago.

There is little doubt that he’s been a fine horse, but this looks a step too far for him on Saturday. If, though, you are one of those people who believe every good horse has one final hurrah left in them when the lights shine brightest, then go for it. For me, though, he’s a pass although a small dabble each-way using the seven places on offer at Betfred online wouldn’t be amiss - for sentiments sake.
