Beverley Racecourse

While Royal Ascot takes centre stage on Tuesday, there are four more meetings taking place across Britain, including an evening card at Beverley.

They race at the East Yorkshire venue from 18:05-20:45 with conditions forecast to be 'soft'. Read on for my Beverley tips.

Beverley Tips

  • 18:05 - Pap's Turf @ 4/1
  • 19:15 - Port And Starburd @ 4/1
  • 19:45 - Puella Law @ 10/3

18:05 - Pap's Turf @ 4/1

A novice contest over 7½f to begin the card and one in which the Charlie Johnston-trained newcomer Footwork commands close scrutiny. He's very much one to monitor, but, with the experience of a run behind him, the Adrian Keatley representative PAP'S TURF could be the answer here.

He was sent north to Ayr (6f, good) this month for his first start and was as big as 25/1 in a four-runner race. He finished last of the quartet but showed enough after a slow beginning to suggest that there's ability there.

The winner, Electrolyte, is bound for Royal Ascot and the Group 1 Coventry Stakes earlier on Tuesday afternoon, while second home Haazeez had shaped well in a Newbury maiden on his own debut.

Pap's Turf should be wiser for that outing at Ayr and the Keatley team have been amongst the winners recently, so a good showing is anticipated.

19:15 - Port And Starburd @ 4/1

Trainer Craig Lidster has his string flying lately, with a 19 per cent strike-rate in recent weeks and the filly PORT AND STARBURD could be another for him here in the Beverley Annual Badgeholders Handicap over 7½f.

She's had four runs since returning this season, taking her tally up to five in all, and produced the best of those efforts to date when beaten 1½-lengths into third spot over this course and distance in a 10-runners handicap earlier in the month.

She led early and was taken on but was still in the firing line late on before just ceding the silver medal late on.

That form is untested, but it appears solid enough in the context of this race and she goes from an unchanged mark now, with William Pyle on board this time and taking a handy 5lb off. They should be going close.

19:45 - Puella Law @ 10/3

The Baker McVeigh And Abbott Yorkshire Handicap features a trio of last-time-out scorers in Summit, Distinction and PUELLA LAW, with preference for the last-named filly for the John & Sean Quinn operation.

She got her breakthrough win over 7½f here last month on soft ground and has conditions in her favour again. After that win, her Beverley record reads 221, having finished second here on her debut last August and again in early May after a 174-day absence.

She had to be game for that success here last time and, given how she finished off, the extra furlong here should be fine. She has already run well in a handicap here and returns to this sphere off what looks a fair of 74.
