Betfred 2000 Guineas Tips: O’Brien can Expand winning record

It's time for the first Classic of the 2025 Flat season as the Betfred 2000 Guineas is staged on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on Saturday (15:35).
A field of 11 go to post and my Betfred 2000 Guineas Tips focuses in on the sole runner for the race's winning-most trainer.
I'm firmly against short-priced favourites in the Betfred 2000 Guineas.
Too often for my liking, we’ve seen the best two-year-olds turn up on the Rowley Mile in early May and let punters down.
City Of Troy is the most recent example, beaten at 4/6f in last year's renewal - 12 months after Auguste Rodin (13/8) flopped for same connections.
I couldn’t entertain Pinatubo losing in 2020 after his utter dominance as a juvenile, but he did, at 5/6f.
There are countless other examples – see files marked Dubawi (2005), New Approach (2008), Kingman (2014), Air Force Blue (2016), etc – but I won’t waste any more of your time.
The wildly different rates at which these horses train on from two to three cannot be underestimated. It can be impossible to predict at times, especially when the majority of the field are having their first run of the campaign.
Speaking of, nine of the last 15 winners of the season's opening Classic turned up without a prep run. Also, recognised trials such as the Craven and Greenham Stakes have a poor record.
So, as impressive as John & Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold was in the former over course and distance a fortnight or so ago, I’m uninspired by him as a betting prospect at 7/4.
The one I am inspired by is EXPANDED for Aidan O’Brien, who's won the Betfred 2000 Guineas a record 10 times.
The Wootton Bassett colt made his debut as late as October last year, winning a maiden at the Curragh in the final strides under Wayne Lordan.
Then, just a week later, he was chucked in at the deep end for the G1 Dewhurst Stakes - one of the leading pointers for the Betfred 2000 Guineas - and exceeded expectation and then some, finishing a neck second to the reopposing Shadow Of Light at 12/1.
The latter, already a Group 1 winner rated 119, was having his fifth run, so I thought it was an enormous effort from such an inexperienced horse under a quick turnaround.
He ticks all the boxes for me. He's got the right rating (118), he's unexposed, he's a fresh horse, he's got course form, he shapes like he'll appreciate the step up to a mile and he represents top connections. What's not to like?
