Bath Tips: Second Collection can come out on top

Bath Racecourse

Flat racing dominates on Wednesday as all five meetings across the UK and Ireland take place on the level. Among those five cards is a six-race offering from Bath - starting at 18:00 and concluding shortly after the finale at 20:45 - and the official going description is firm, meaning conditions will be lightning-fast.

I've picked out a trio to follow at the Somerset venue, including Second Collection who heads Wednesday's Bath tips.

Bath Tips

  • 18:00 - Second Collection @ 7/2
  • 18:30 - Lil Guff @ 2/1
  • 20:45 - Khangai @ 3/1

18:00 - Second Collection @ 7/2

Firm-ground form is surely a must at Bath on Wednesday and Tony Carroll’s SECOND COLLECTION won her only start on that going. That success came here over a slightly shorter trip recently and she didn’t get the smoothest of passages through the race either.

She got a bump in the early stages of the race but recovered well and travelled very strongly into the race. The daughter of Delegator then had to wait for a run in the final furlong or so, but she got the job done and won well under the circumstances.

Second Collection is no stranger to Bath and the eight-year-old has run here eight times, coming away with two victories. Her highest winning mark is 79 and although that win was five years ago, she should be very competitive off her current mark in these very suitable conditions.

Tony Carroll is Bath’s leading trainer so far this year, with six winners from his 22 runners, and Second Collection can add to that tally here. There are plenty of question marks over most of her rivals and she’s the one to beat.

18:30 - Lil Guff @ 2/1

This 0-80 handicap over an extended five furlongs is only open to horses who haven’t won yet this year and a return to winning ways could be on the agenda for LIL GUFF. The daughter of Twilight Son has won at Bath before and boasts a 100 per cent record on firm ground.

Daniel & Claire Kubler have had three winners from five runners at Bath so far this season and Lil Guff is their sole representative at the track on Wednesday. A 60 per cent strike-rate certainly bodes well for her chances and she’s definitely better than her latest performance indicates.

The handicapper did respond to that effort by dropping her 1lb and that can only be a benefit in the long term. Last victorious off a 7lb lower mark in June 2023, a return to firm ground will surely lead her back into the winners’ enclosure sooner rather than later.

20:45 - Khangai @ 3/1

There doesn’t appear to be a great deal between the eight runners in the last of Today's Horse Races at Bath.

One of the more interesting runners is Mark Rimmell’s KHANGAI, who was beaten by less than a length when finishing third at Nottingham last time out.

That solid effort is probably the best recent piece of form on offer and that means he’s surely the one to beat. He runs off the same mark here and a similar effort should be enough to get the better of this weaker field.

An easy winner off a 4lb higher mark at Chepstow in June 2023, an overdue return to the winners’ enclosure could be on the agenda.
