Henry de Bromhead horses will always attract plenty of betting interest from casual watchers of the sport, primarily due to his link to jockey Rachael Blackmore. Once it was announced that she would be riding this horse a year ago, there was a surge of money on him to win and we saw the odds tumble from 20/1 to 7/1 favourite briefly before the market corrected itself, but he still went off at 10/1. It just goes to show one new nugget of information can really influence the market.

Blackmore has chosen to ride Minella Indo for de Bromhead this year, so I’m not expecting such volatility in the market for Ain’t That A Shame. This 10-year-old was the final finisher in 2023, with Blackmore guiding him safely around the course to finish 17th, no fewer than 106 lengths behind the winner. That run may well be why the odds are so big this time around.

It has actually been a more-than-solid season for Ain’t That A Shame, having won twice at Gowran Park, both times on very soft ground. The second of those victories caught even de Bromhead by surprise as a strong run as a 14/1 shot in a very decent field showed some real form.

Since that day, however, the horse has seen a change in ownership, as amateur jockey David Maxwell has purchased him and will ride Ain’t That A Shame himself.

This has unsurprisingly raised many eyebrows among the betting community but it is his lifetime ambition to take part in the race and this is a great opportunity for the real estate entrepreneur.

If Blackmore was aboard then this horse would make some impact in the betting market. Yet without her, I think we can put Ain’t That A Shame firmly in the bracket of each-way long shot, at best.
