Starting at 8.15am, this 52-man field will all tee off in pairs in 10 to 15-minute increments, with the top-two players on the Race to Dubai – No. 1 Rory McIlroy and No. 2 Marco Penge – the last duo out at 12.40pm. Although this means that there are no strict morning and afternoon waves, there is enough spread in the tee times for a bias to develop.
Conditions are forecast to be bright and warm (24°C) for those first groups out, and with just a puff of breeze at around 4mph, they should be able to score well. As the temperatures rise to 30°C+ in the afternoon, so do the winds, when we could see consistent speeds of 9-10mph, gusting up to 20mph.
With that, I’m going to focus my attention on the earliest starters – particularly players out before 10am – and have come up with two selections who can hit the front in round one of the DP World Tour Championship.

1.75 pts Shane Lowry each-way (1/5 - 5 places) @ 25/1
Start time: 8.15am
Shane Lowry arrives in Dubai having led after round one on each of his last two appearances. He’s got a fine record at the Earth Course, and currently putting better than he has at any other point this season, he can score a hat-trick of first-round leads on Thursday.
The Irishman has had a mixed year in 2025. He’s struggled to make his mark in any of the majors, producing a best of 40th in The Open, but he was of course an integral part of Team Europe’s Ryder Cup success.
He twice went close on the PGA Tour, finishing 2nd in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Truist Championship. Meanwhile, his game has looked in good shape on his return to the DP World Tour, placing 3rd in the DP World India Championship and 12th in last week’s Abu Dhabi Championship – opening with a 64 in both events to claim the first-round lead.
His approach play has been electric, ranking 1st in this field in 2025. In addition, he’s shown improvements on the greens of late, gaining strokes with the putter in seven of his last 10 appearances.
Lowry has played 12 editions of the DP World Tour Championship, recording bests of 2nd in 2017 and 3rd last year. He shared the first-round lead here with Rory McIlroy in 2014 and with countless other low rounds to his name, including a closing 63 in 2017, he is a standout candidate in this market.

1 pt Grant Forrest each-way (1/5 - 5 places) @ 50/1
Start time: 9.05am
As a strong driver who usually excels on the greens, it’s no surprise that Grant Forrest has looked comfortable during his few starts at this week’s venue. He’s also hitting his irons stronger than ever in 2025, and with two first-round top-10s over his previous four appearances, he can strike in the calm of Thursday morning.
Forrest won his second DP World Tour title in Scotland at the NEXO Championship in August, but he followed that triumph with four straight missed cuts. He bounced back with an 11th-place finish at the Dunhill Links – an event that is often a useful guide for the Earth Course – and he then finished 16th in the Open de Espana on his third-last outing.
The Scot made a positive start in each of those tournaments, opening with a seven-under 65 in the Dunhill Links to finish round one in 7th place, and he finished Thursday one place higher in Spain after a first-round 67.
Ranking 25th in putting and driving over the last three months, Forrest’s game is ticking along nicely at present. He put both of those areas to positive use here in 2021, helping him secure a 16th-place finish – his best in the event. He again showed his ability to perform here with a seven-under 65 in the final round last year, demonstrating the prowess to find a low one at the Earth Course tomorrow.
