There doesn’t appear to be any significant bias in tomorrow’s weather forecast for the opening round of the Canadian Open, therefore I’m going to leave the first-round leader market alone this week and instead focus on a couple of place bets that appealed.
2.5 pts Seamus Power Top 20 @ 14/5
Irishman, Seamus Power has been very consistent since returning from a hip injury at the beginning of the year and can amass his third top-20 in four starts this week.
Power has missed just three cuts in 13 starts this year, though was initially struggling to make his presence felt near the top of the leaderboard. He recorded his first top-25 of the season in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, finishing 21st, and has gone on to produce his best run of results over his last five starts.
Following a 26th-place finish in the Valspar Championship, he missed the cut on his next start in the Texas Open, but he immediately bounced back to post his best finish of the year so far, when 12th in the RBC Heritage. He again followed that with a missed cut in Texas, at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, though responded swiftly once more, finishing 16th in the Wells Fargo Championship when we last saw him.
Both of those top-20s have been engineered by top-class approach play, indeed he ranked 3rd in this area at Quail Hollow, as well as 2nd in greens-in-regulation. He’s the sixth-best iron player in this field over his last 20 rounds and though still not quite able to rediscover his touch on the greens as yet, he does have a good record on bentgrass.
Power missed the cut here in 2019, pre-renovation. However, he does have a Canadian Open top-10 to his name from 2017, and with several top-25s across the John Deere Classic and Travelers Championship, he has some positive comp form to match.
1.5 pts Joel Dahmen Top 20 @ 13/2
Joel Dahmen began his pro career in Canada, even winning the PGA Tour Canada Order of Merit in 2014, thanks to two victories. He again showed his affinity for golf in the country with an 8th-place finish on his last Canadian Open start in 2018 and with recent form solid, he looks a good shout to notch another top-20 this week.
Dahmen enters this week after making his last five cuts on the spin and eight of his last 10, with a season’s best performance of 11th in THE PLAYERS Championship representing his only top-20 of the year so far.
He’s hit the ball well for the most part this season and has especially stood out with his iron play, ranking 2nd in proximity, 29th in greens-in-regulation and 44th in approach. When combined with his driving and short game, he arrives here ranking 32nd tee-to-green in this field over the last three months.
Dahmen hasn’t played at Hamilton but a runner-up finish in the John Deere Classic in 2018 should serve him well and help in rewarding his generally reliable play with a loftier finish this week.
