The FA Cup could be a welcome distraction for Manchester United who head to the DW Stadium on Monday to take on Wigan Athletic in their intriguing third-round clash (KO, 8.15pm).

United are eighth in the Premier League and have already been dumped out of any further European competition this season, and the EFL Cup.

The FA Cup represents United's last realistic chance of silverware this season and they are likely to take a serious view of this fixture with League One side Wigan Athletic.

Erik ten Hag can't afford any more embarrassment this season, and a defeat here would certainly nudge him further towards the exit at Old Trafford.

His side have had little to shout about this season but they should be too strong for the Latics and we have picked out a treble of bets that pays out at 5/1 on Betfred's #Pickyourpunt builder.

Wigan Athletic vs Manchester United Betbuilder Tips:

  • Under 3.5 goals
  • Both teams to score - No
  • Alejandro Garnacho to score a goal

#Pickyourpunt pays 5/1

Under 3.5 goals

Wins have been hard to come by, but so have goals for misfiring Manchester United in recent weeks.

The Red Devils' last road trip ended in a 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest and that was the first time United had scored away from home in four attempts. And goals may be at a premium once again as they will meet some stubborn resistance from the home side.

Wigan are looking to bounce back from their eight-point deduction earlier this season, and they are making a decent fist of things in League One, where they have edged their way up to 17th place.

Shaun Maloney's men have won six of their last nine home games and have kept clean sheets in four of their last five on their own patch, so they can make life hard for the 12-time FA Cup winners.

Goals are unlikely to flow in this clash and it is difficult to see more than three being scored at the DW Stadium overall.

Both teams to score - No

It was 4-0 to Manchester United when these two last met in the fourth round of this competition in 2017 and that was the third time in four meetings that United had run out as winners by that margin against Wigan.

In fact, United have won nine of their last ten tussles with Wigan without conceding.

Another Red Devils win looks likely here given the gulf between the two sides and it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see Wigan draw a blank once again, too.

Alejandro Garnacho to score a goal

There haven't been many bright spots for Manchester United this season but the performances of young forward Alejandro Garnacho have been ray of light amid some gloomy occasions, and he could light up the DW Stadium on Monday.

The 19-year-old winger has bagged five goals this season, including a recent brace against Aston Villa, and he looks a value bet to open the scoring at the DW Stadium, where many of the United ranks will likely look forward to taking on some inferior opposition.

The Argentine starlet is fancied to make his mark on Monday and help to bring home a 5/1 treble.
