Virtus host FCSB in the first leg of their first-round Champions League qualifier on Tuesday evening. Virtus were crowned San Marino's Campionato champions last season, while Romanian side FCSB finished at the peak of the Liga I regular season, before topping the championship playoff group.

FCSB are well fancied to take a first-leg advantage back to the National Arena.

Virtus are expected to have full squad to select from but for FCSB, right-back Alexandru Pantea remains on the sidelines.

Football Odds

Under 3.5 goals @ 1/1

FCSB are 1/25 to get the better of Virtus in Acquaviva on Tuesday evening and it’s clear the Romanian champions have a class edge over their San Marino opponents.

The goal line has been bumped up for the game, as you would expect given there is such an overwhelming favourite in this first-round Champions League qualifier, but there are a few reasons to suggest the contest may not bust the 3.5 mark.

FCSB enjoyed a successful season, which took the Red and Blues to the Romanian top-flight title, but Elias Charalambous’ men hit just 53 goals in 30 regular season matches and only 12 in 10 playoff fixtures.

Clearly, a clash against Virtus is a step down in class, but it’s a step FCSB will have to take without key forward Coman.

The 26-year-old finished as the division’s joint-top scorer with 18 goals last term. He also hit nine assists and won the Player of the Year award. Coman had been away on international duty with Romania, but the wide man has now made the move to Qatar club Al-Gharafa.

Those are big holes for Charalambous to fill, and Popescu, who has been touted as Coman’s replacement, has been ruled out after undergoing surgery.

Virtus conceded only 20 goals in the San Marino top flight last term and Luigi Bizzotto’s men have the structure and commitment to at least keep this contest competitive.

Under 3.5 goals at 1/1 Draw/FCSB half-time/full-time @ 7/2

It could also pay to have a small play on the double result market. It’s 7/2 for the game to be tied at half-time and FCSB win come the final whistle and that looks a little too big.

Clearly, there’s a chance that the Red and Blues will blow Virtus away, but given the summer upheaval of losing their best player, it appears more likely that Charalambous’ men may have to be patient in their quest for victory.
