Football generic sub

We are nearly there when it comes to the South American World Cup qualifiers, with just two matches left to play. Uruguay should be okay given their strong goal difference, but still need a point to guarantee their place at the World Cup next summer.

Peru need two wins to even stand a chance of making the play-off, so their progression seems unlikely. Below you can find my Uruguay vs Peru predictions featuring match odds and more.

Team News

Uruguay’s squad contains the usual suspects, including Darwin Nunez, who swapped Liverpool for Saudi Arabia this summer. Premier League duo Manuel Uguarte and Rodrigo Bentancur should feature in midfield with Wolves’ Santiago Bueno hoping to get some minutes in defence.

Jose Gimenez and Maximilian Araujo are both out through injury however, although goalkeeper Sergio Rochet does return after missing the last two camps. Santiago Mele has deputised well, so he could keep his place after a clean sheet against Venezuela.

Uruguay vs Peru Stats

  • Uruguay won their last home qualifier 2-0
  • Peru have scored just one goal in their last seven games
  • Darwin Nunez has scored 13 goals in 35 international matches

Peru have struggled for goals during this qualification campaign, and the attack looks weak again with Paolo Guerrero and Gianluca Lapadula both still absent. Andre Carrillo also missed out this time around while Edison Flores and Alex Valera have both recently withdrawn through injury.

Burnley defender Oliver Sonne is one of only two players that ply their trade in Europe, along with Copenhagen’s Marcos Lopez.

Uruguay vs Peru Odds

Uruguay are priced at just 2/7 to win this game, given them an implied win probability of 78% ahead of this home game. Peru are 10/1 to take the win while a draw is 10/3 for this qualifier.

Over 2.5 goals is 1/1, BTTS is 13/8 and Nunez is the favourite to score first at 3/1.

Uruguay to win to nil @ 7/10

I will back the home side to win this game to nil, given they are by far the stronger side looking at the two teams. Uruguay have been on a really poor run of form since the Copa America, winning just one in the 10 games directly after the competition that they finished third in.

However, they blew off the lingering cobwebs with a 2-0 win over Venezuela that should have given them a bit of confidence, and Peru have been hopeless in front of goal - scoring just one goal in their last seven matches. I can’t see that changing in this tough away game so I will pick Uruguay to win to nil at a short price of 7/10.

Darwin Nunez to score anytime @ 23/20

Nunez has scored 13 goals in 35 international matches, but he scored five in 11 in 2024 and five in six in 2023. He has obviously got a bit of a reputation for being wasteful in front of goal, but I think the move away from Liverpool and out of the spotlight will actually help him progress.

Now at Al-Hilal, I think he can start to score key goals for his country, as he has done pretty consistently over the last three years. He has what it takes to become Uruguay’s key man, and I’m expecting him to find the net against a weak Peruvian outfit.
