Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley Prediction: Palhinha to return to the EPL and the ref’s notebook?

Tottenham Hotspur open their 2025/26 Premier League account at home to Burnley on Saturday, August 16 (15:00). It is a game defined by the new. The coach who defined Brentford’s modern success, Thomas Frank, replaces Europa League victor Ange Postecoglou in the Spurs dugout. Meanwhile, Burnley’s presence in the top flight is also new, though The Clarets are a consistent yo-yo club since Sean Dyche’s steady hand left the tiller.
Burnley boss Scott Parker is well-known in these parts. The former England midfielder played for Spurs for two seasons in the 2010s. Parker was a defensive lynchpin of Harry Redknapp’s midfield before being moved to Fulham as part of Andre Villas-Boas’ ill-fated squad rebuild.
Here are my Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley predictions ahead of this traditional Premier League 3pm kick-off.

Team News
New boss Frank will have to wait to assess much of his squad. England midfielder James Maddison is out long-term with an ACL injury. Radu Dragusin is on the shelf with the same complaint. Knee injuries confine Dejan Kulusevski and summer buy Kota Takai to the sidelines.
Manor Solomon, Destiny Udogie and Bryan Gil all miss out. But the news is better for Dominic Solanke. The striker came on as a substitute in the Uefa Super Cup defeat to PSG on Wednesday after a knee problem.
Parker has a plethora of new faces to pick from, as the Turf Moor club have remodelled their squad ahead of the new campaign. Goalkeeper James Trafford and defender CJ Egan-Riley have moved on. All eyes on familiar faces Martin Dubravka and Kyle Walker as they look to fill the void.
Switzerland international Zeki Amdouni remains a long-term absentee with an ACL problem. Winger Benson Manuel has been out for almost a year now due to an Achilles tendon injury.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley Odds
Spurs are 4/11 to secure the win at home on the opening day. Burnley have a tall task at 17/2. The draw is priced at 4/1.
Spurs to win to nil @ 6/5
Burnley made a miserly defence their bread and butter in the Championship. The Lancashire side conceded an unprecedented 16 goals all season and Trafford’s 29 clean sheets were a Championship record too.
What they lacked was firepower. Burnley’s 69 goals paled in comparison to champions Leeds, who netted 95 times. Parker’s men come into the Premier League shorn of the man responsible for much of their scoring output. Josh Brownhill banged in 18 goals last season before departing on a free. Armando Broja has been brought in to address this shortcoming, but the Chelsea graduate’s best top-flight scoring season garnered six goals in 32 games for Southampton. Given his injury problems, which limited Broja to eight games on loan at Fulham last term, one wonders where the goals are going to come from.
Parker has overseen three promotions from the Championship, one each with Bournemouth, Fulham and now Burnley. But he has never kept a side in the Premier League. I do not trust that the ex-West Ham man will have configured a top-flight Clarets set-up in time for this game.
Spurs have goals in them. Their defence is far from rock-solid, but I feel like it can withstand a visit from this Burnley side. Solanke is back having lodged a decent 15 goals in 46 games across all competitions last term. Richarlison is mercurial but knows where the hole is.
Heung-min Son, who has left for Los Angeles FC, is a big miss. But former loanee Mathys Tel returns on a permanent deal while the front line will be bolstered by new attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus. There is enough talent in Tottenham’s ranks to win this without conceding.

Palhinha to receive a card @ 12/5
Spurs picked up a diamond deal this summer bringing Joao Palhinha back to the Premier League. The midfielder dazzled for Fulham before departing for Bayern Munich last summer. The Portugal international picked up a Bundesliga winner’s medal, but only made 17 league appearances.
Palhinha may cut a frustrated figure upon his Premier League return. A year after leaving to try and break into the first team of one of the sport’s most iconic clubs, the midfielder finds himself back in London plying his trade.
Familiar surroundings often foster familiar habits. That is what I am banking on with this tip. Palhinha holds the single-season yellow cards record in the Premier League, racking up 14 in 35 games in the 2022/23 season. This was no aberration, as Palhinha totted up 13 yellow cards in 33 games the following year.
Palhinha only suffered three Bundesliga yellow cards last term, but did not play much. He also received seven apiece in his final two seasons at Sporting CP. But there seems to be something about Palhinha’s style that Premier League referees do not like. Look for that trend to continue on Saturday afternoon.
