Today’s Live Football on TV: What to watch on Wednesday, May 22
There is not too much televised football coming our way on Wednesday but there is at least a game with high proportions as Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen go head-to-head in the Europa League final, which will be shown live on TNT Sports. The story heading into this clash is whether the German outfit can claim trophy number two of the season, after winning the Bundesliga, to take them one game away from winning an invincible treble.
The other game taking place is a post-season friendly between Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, which will be shown live via SPURSPLAY.
This year's Europa League final comes from Dublin's Aviva Stadium and the eyes of the world will be fixated on Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen. What they have achieved this year at this point has been incredible. Not only have they been the first Bundesliga club to dethrone Bayern Munich for the first time in over a decade, they did so without conceding a single point.
And the fact that they can secure an invincible treble with the Europa League and the DFB-Pokal this week is just mind-blowing. This Leverkusen side has already written themselves into the history books but the next few days can secure them an immortalised legacy.
Their attention first turns to the clash with Atalanta, who knocked them out of the Europa League at the round of 16 stage two years ago, so you can imagine they will be out for revenge as well as claiming their second European honour.
It's set to be a cracking match in the Irish capital as Atalanta have shown themselves that they are a force to be reckoned with.
The other match on Wednesday sees Newcastle take on Tottenham in Melbourne for a friendly, which has quite a lot of people perplexed. The season ended on Sunday and Euro 2024 is right around the corner, with some players on both sides likely to play a part in the summer spectacle.
The Magpies are waiting to find out if they shall be taking part in European football next season. They need Manchester City to beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Saturday as it will secure them a place in the Europa Conference League.
Spurs had to settle for a spot in the Europa League and manager Ange Postecoglou was left angered at some of the attitudes towards his team's clash against Man City last week as it impacted their rivals Arsenal's title bid. The Australian will be eager to make a lot of changes over the summer and this friendly might be the last chance for some to prove to him that they deserve to be a part of his plans.
