All eyes will be on the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon (12:45) as bitter rivals Sunderland and Newcastle United lock horns in one of the standout fixtures of the FA Cup third round.

The Black Cats began 2024 on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Preston North End, while the Magpies were on the wrong side of a six-goal thriller at Anfield last time out.

Sunderland vs Newcastle Prediction

  • Newcastle to win and both teams to score @ 11/5
  • Alexander Isak to score anytime @ 23/20

Team News

Patrick Roberts sat out of Sunderland's victory against Preston with a suspected calf problem, while Bradley Dack is facing a month on the sidelines with a hamstring problem.

Niall Huggins, Corry Evans and Jay Matete all remain on the treatment table for the hosts, and Dennis Cirkin has suffered a setback in his recovery from a muscle problem, so he'll also be unavailable for this one.

As for the visitors, their injury woes continue to mount up - Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier both missed the trip to Anfield due to calf and groin injuries respectively, while Sandro Tonali remains suspended.

Joe Willock, Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes, Matt Targett and Javi Manquillo will all be absent for the trip to the Stadium of Light.

Match Odds

Due to this being a cup tie, 90-minute betting applies.

The hosts are 10/3 to claim a famous victory, while Newcastle are 8/11 to put an end to their poor run of form, while the draw is 3/1, which would force a replay at St. James' Park.

Over 2.5 goals is priced up at 4/6, while both teams to score is 8/13.

Newcastle to win and both teams to score (90 mins) @ 11/5

Newcastle are winless in their last nine meetings with Sunderland, however, the sides haven't met since 2016.

The hosts are unbeaten in three under new boss Michael Beale, while Newcastle have lost their last three, and Eddie Howe will know that his side can't afford to lose this fixture after such a torrid spell in recent weeks.

However, despite the injuries to Newcastle, I still think they're a level above their opponents here, and if they're on top of their game, they should be able to grind out a victory.

Sunderland have scored in 12 of their 14 games at the Stadium of Light across all competitions and have also conceded in six of their last eight home games. Meanwhile, Newcastle have scored an impressive 39 goals in 20 Premier League games but have just one clean sheet in their last eight in all competitions, suggesting that goals could be on the cards.

Alexander Isak to score anytime (90 mins) @ 23/20

The Sweden international is expected to lead the Newcastle front line with Callum Wilson out injured.

The 24-year-old has 11 goals across all competitions this season, as well as bagging in both of the Toon's last two games.
