Slovakia vs Wales Prediction: More Welsh misery expected

Saturday 8th June 2024, 8:18am

Wales will have already been feeling pretty low having missed out on Euro 2024 this summer, and their bid to raise spirits with a win over Gibraltar this week seriously backfired. The minnows had lost their last 11 games in a row without scoring, but managed to hold Wales to a 0-0 draw on Thursday night, in what is one of the worst results in Rob Page’s tenure.

Next up, Wales travel to Slovakia (Sunday, 19:45) looking to repair their reputation, but they are taking on a side that have qualified for Euro 2024, and could go well in a group containing Belgium, Romania and Ukraine. Below you can find my Slovakia vs Wales prediction.

Slovakia vs Wales Betting Tips

Team News

Slovakia must finalise their preferred starting XI ahead of their Euro 2024 opener and they got a confidence-boosting 4-0 win over San Marino in midweek. Marek Rodák looks likely to be the number one ahead of Martin Dubravka, while PSG’s Milan Škriniar is the star at the centre of defence and will captain this side. Ondrej Duda and Róbert Boženík could come into the team having sat out of that win over San Marino.

Lewis Koumas and Tom King came off the bench to make their debuts for Wales against Gibraltar, while Jay Dasilva won man of the match in his first start. Page is likely to revert back to his strongest starting XI, with Brennan Johnson, Kieffer Moore and Dan James all likely to play vs Slovakia.

Slovakia vs Wales Odds

Slovakia are the favourites for this game, priced at 11/10 to win, giving them an implied win probability of 47%, while Wales are available at 5/2. A draw can be backed at 23/10, BTTS is 5/6 and over 2.5 goals is 11/10.

Slovakia to win @ 11/10

This feels like a good price given the quality of both teams at this moment in time. Wales only missed out on this summer’s Euros after losing a penalty shootout to Poland, but even so, they probably should have got out of a relatively kind group without the need for a play-off, as they finished well behind both Turkey and Croatia.

Meanwhile, Slovakia only lost to Portugal during qualifying, and have a well-organised team with some genuine talent. I think they will be competitive at the Euros, but more importantly, they should be able to beat this Wales team in some style. Home win.

Slovakia -2 @ 17/2

I think there’s good value in backing Slovakia to win by a healthy margin here. In particular, the 17/2 on offer for them to win by three goals catches my eye. Wales may have named a changed team for that 0-0 draw with Gibraltar, but that result has surely dented the confidence in the Welsh camp. Page has failed to take this squad to Euro 2024 and now this game has taken on extra importance for the squad.

However, this is also the final game of the season for the Welsh players, who will surely want to get to the beach as quickly as possible. Meanwhile Slovakia are going to be hungry to prove themselves and their players will want to secure their place in the starting XI ahead of an exciting Euros campaign. I think the levels of intent will be different from the two teams, and Slovakia could heap misery on this beleaguered Welsh outfit.
