Team News

Wednesday will be without keeper Ben Hamer due to injury. The former Watford man would have been among the substitutes with James Beadle, who has returned to the club on a season-long loan deal, the first choice.

The Owls have been busy during the summer window and new signings Max Lowe, Yan Valery and Jamal Lowe are among those pushing for a starting spot on Sunday.

Rooney took charge of Argyle earlier in the summer and Sunday’s game will be his first competitive game as manager.

The Pilgrims have no injury concerns, while new recruits Nathanael Ogbeta and Victor Pálsson could be handed starts.

Sheffield Wednesday are 5/6 to open the new season with a home win, the draw is priced at 13/5 and Plymouth are 100/30 to come away with maximum points.

Only one team has scored in each of the last three meetings between these two sides and both teams to score No is 10/11.

However, over 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in four of the last six head-to-head games and that is priced at 10/11, with under 2.5 goals a 4/5 chance.

Sheffield Wednesday to win @ 5/6

Wednesday enjoyed an incredible end to last season as a six-game unbeaten run (W4, D2) saw them pull clear of danger and avoid an immediate return to League 1. The South Yorkshire side initially struggled under Danny Rohl but eight wins and just three losses in their final 14 games suggests they can avoid a repeat of last season’s survival scrap in the German manager’s first full season in charge.

There should also be a sense of optimism around Plymouth following Rooney’s arrival, but claiming any points in the opening round of games looks a big ask for Argyle.

The Pilgrims were among the worst travellers in the second tier last season as they picked up just 16 points on their travels, winning just three of their 23 trips, and they could be in line for a difficult afternoon at Hillsborough.

Wednesday have won each of their last three home games against Plymouth and they can make it four in a row on Sunday.

Sheff wed to beat plymouth @ 5-6

Anthony Musaba anytime scorer @ 11/4

Owls forward Anthony Musaba wasn’t necessarily prolific last season with seven goals and five assists in 41 games but he did start to find a bit of form towards the end of the campaign.

Musaba managed two goals and two assists in the final six fixtures of 2023/24, starting four of those games, and looks a good outside option to grab an anytime effort on Sunday.

The Dutchman was on target against Germany’s Werder Bremen in pre-season and should be in Rohl’s starting XI after playing the full 90 minutes in the final friendly against Spanish outfit Leganes.
