Barcelona head to Sevilla on Sunday night, with the Catalans looking to close the gap on the Madrid clubs who face each other on Saturday.

They managed to cut the deficit last weekend, with a bit of help from local rivals Espanyol who upset Los Blancos. However, it wasn’t a particularly convincing display from Barça who only narrowly defeated struggling Alavés 1-0 at home, thanks to a strike from Robert Lewandowski.

It was the kind of game they were conspiring to lose in the final weeks of 2024, so Hansi Flick will at least take positives from the result, but Barça fans will be scratching their heads as to why their side is utterly dominating some matches, but struggling in others.

In midweek, they reverted back to the former, with a crushing 5-0 win at Valencia in the Copa del Rey. It was a night to remember for Ferran Torres, with the 24-year-old scoring a hat-trick in the opening half hour on his return to Mestalla.

Ferran is looking like an increasingly viable alternative to Lewandowski up front for Barça. While there is no suggestion that the 18-goal Pichichi leader is on the brink of losing his starting role, Flick may be tempted to rotate his forwards more frequently, with their last five matches with Ferran as a starter serving up five wins, and 25 goals.

It’s eight wins and two draws from 10 competitive outings for the Catalans so far in 2025 overall. That’s a significant upturn on their form before the break, and unlike Real Madrid, they don’t have a Champions League play-off to worry about over the next fortnight.

February should therefore be a month when Flick has fresh players at his disposal, and there’s an opportunity for Barcelona to put together the kind of winning streak that ought to propel them towards the very top of the table.

In the not so distant past, a trip to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán would have ranked among their most difficult assignments on the entire calendar. Not so much these days, with Sevilla currently on course for a third straight bottom-half finish.

They are currently coached by García Pimienta. The 50-year is from Barcelona and very much a product of the FC Barcelona system, having spent the majority of his football life with the club in various capacities, before taking over as Las Palmas boss in 2022.

His preference for possession-based football was very much evident in the Canary Islands, but he has been slightly more pragmatic in Seville. The jury is still out to some extent on Pimienta, with his team’s failure to win back-to-back league matches this season a reflection on a side that will struggle to finish any higher than mid-table.

They are unbeaten in the league in 2025, but their four matches so far this calendar year have included uninspiring draws against relegation candidates Valencia, Espanyol and Getafe.

There was a much more impressive 2-1 win at Girona sandwiched in amongst those results, with Dodi Lukebakio netting an 88th minute winner. The winger has been the undisputed star for the Andalusians this season, with the Belgian scoring nine of their 24 league goals.

There hasn’t been a great deal else to like about their attacking play though. Striker Isaac Romero has only netted twice in 18 league appearances, while on only one occasion have Sevilla scored more than once at home, and that was against bottom club Real Valladolid back in September.

Team News:

Sevilla did add Akor Adams as competition for Romero up front in the January transfer window, however the ex-Montpellier striker has already picked up an injury and won’t feature in this game.

They’ll be forced into a change at right-back here, with José Ángel Carmona suspended, meaning promising youngster Juanlu Sánchez should start. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Tanguy Nianzou are also out injured.

As for Barcelona, Flick is expected to recall Lewandowski and Marc Casadó to his lineup, after both were rested at Valencia. Gavi could also return from a head injury, while either Ronald Araújo or the fit-again Iñigo Martínez should come into the defence in place of Eric García.

The visitors are still missing Marc Bernal, Andreas Christensen and Marc-André ter Stegen to injuries.

Sevilla vs Barcelona Odds

Barcelona are the clear favourites at 4/9 to win this game. You can back the Draw at 18/5, while Sevilla are priced at 11/2 to record their first league victory over the Catalans since 2015.

If you expect the hosts to at least compete here, you can back with Sevilla with a +2.00 Handicap at 8/13. Sevilla or Draw is priced at 13/8 in the Double Chance market, while you can back the Andalusians to win either half at 2/1.

Barcelona have chalked up some big wins since the turn of the year though, scoring four or more in 60% of their 2025 fixtures to date. You can back Barça to score over 3.5 goals at 100/30 in this game, while Barcelona and Over 2.5 goals is priced at 9/10.

Lewandowski leads the way as the 100/30 favourite to score first in this match, while he’s also on offer at 5/6 to score anytime. Raphinha is available at 11/8 to add to his 12-goal tally in La Liga, while Lamine Yamal is priced at 15/8 to get on the scoresheet.

You can also take advantage of a Price Boost, and back Either team to win, Both teams to score, Lamine Yamal 1+ shots on target and Raphinha to score anytime at enhanced odds of 9/2.

From a home perspective, you can back Lukebakio to get on the scoresheet at 21/10, while Isaac Romero is priced at 11/4 to net against Barcelona, with his two goals so far this term having come against Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

Bet 1 - Barcelona & Both teams to score @ 8/5

While many of Sevilla’s recent matches have not exactly been action-packed affairs, there has been no shortage of goalmouth action whenever they’ve come up against the top three this term. They lost 5-1 at Barcelona in the reverse fixture, while trips to the Madrid clubs ended in 4–3 and 4-2 defeats.

That’s perhaps a reflection of Pimienta’s philosophy and his desire for his team to look to control the ball in spells and at least look to create opportunities, rather than simply park the bus against the big teams.

Barça have struggled most against teams who have done the latter this season though, and it feels like they should get enough space in this game to do plenty of damage in the final third. They have conceded in 83% of their away league games though, and I’m backing Barcelona and Both teams to score at 8/5 here.

Bet 2 - Dodi Lukebakio 1+ shots on target & Lamine Yamal 1+ shots on target @ 11/10

Some of La Liga’s best wingers will be on display in this game, and the way he has been playing this term, Sevilla’s Lukebakio is creeping his way up that list all the time.

Only four players have scored more goals than the Belgian heading into matchday 23, while his average of 2.7 shots per game is the most of any active player in the Spanish top flight who doesn’t play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Meanwhile, only Kylian Mbappé is averaging more shots per game than Lamine Yamal. The teenager has hit the target at least once in all nine of his Barça appearances so far in 2025.

Both players should get opportunities to test the opposing keeper in this game, and I’m using the Bet Builder to back Dodi Lukebakio 1+ shots on target and Lamine Yamal 1+ shots on target at 11/10.
