Scotland vs Hungary Prediction: Expect goals at both ends in key Group A match

It’s the third and final game of Euro 2024 Group A, and Scotland are clinging onto hopes of sneaking through to the knockout stages.

Scotland have one final roll of the dice when playing Hungary in their final fixture from Group A. Following a crushing defeat to Germany on the opening night and a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Switzerland in midweek, Steve Clarke’s men remain in the running. Victory on Sunday in Stuttgart would give the Scots a fighting chance of going through, while anything less than three points sends them home.

Hungary are the only team in the pool yet to pick up a point following defeats to Switzerland and Germany. They’ve performed much better than the bare results suggest, and the Magyars plan to sign off in style. Will Hungary grab their first win at the third time of asking? Scotland started their previous two games as the underdogs, but the betting ahead of Sunday’s game is much more competitive. The Scots rolled up their sleeves on Wednesday and battled to a 1-1 draw with the Swiss. It’s a match they could’ve won, and Scotland took the lead in 13 minutes following a deflected shot by Scott McTominay. A lapse in concentration at the back allowed the Swiss to equalise and hold on for a share.

Like their opponents, Hungary also lost their opening game, a 3-1 defeat against Switzerland in Cologne. It was a disappointing effort, but they performed better on matchday two despite losing 2-0 to the host nation in Stuttgart. Will they finally get off the mark and sign off with a victory? You can back Hungary to win at 6/4 with Betfred. Scotland is 13/8 to pick up a crucial three points while the draw trades at 11/4 and that’s sure to be popular.

Both teams to score

We’ve backed both teams to score in each of Scotland’s previous two group games and aim for the treble on Sunday. Clarke’s men found the net despite leaking five goals last Friday against an impressive German side. Wednesday saw them double their tally to two goals when netting first in that entertaining 1-1 draw with the Swiss, who are now through to the next round and preparing for knockout football.

Checking Hungary’s Euro 2024 form, they also scored a consolation when suffering a heavy defeat in their first group outing. But they failed to find a way past an organised and efficient German defence in midweek when losing 2-0. The Hungarians provided a good test for the home team in that game but failed to take their chances. They should have more joy against a nervy Scottish backline that has already conceded six goals in two games.

Over 2.5 goals

I fancy both managers to take the handbrake off and push for the win on Sunday evening. Hungary has no points on the board at present, and a three-point total is unlikely to see them progress. It looks like they’re already out of the running, but they can salvage something from their trip by beating Scotland and ending on a high. They’ll surely set up to score goals and win the game following back-to-back defeats.

Scotland know they must win to stand any chance of going through and keeping their Euro 2024 dreams alive, possibly as one of the best-performing third-place finishers. That’s easier said than done against a decent Hungarian side, especially with such an unconvincing and injury-ravaged defence. I expect Scotland to be exciting in attack but fragile at the back, and I suggest backing over 2.5 goals.

Hungary 2-1

As usual, we’ll finish the Euro 2024 preview with a correct score prediction and suggest backing Hungary to win 2-1. They performed better against Germany than their opponents, despite getting nothing from the game, and should punish an already weak Scots defence that is now without Kieran Tierney due to injury. Back a 2-1 win for Hungary at good odds, and I hope this game lives up to the hype.
