Rangers play Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday (19:45) in their game in hand. Win well, and they’ll pass Celtic at the top of the Premiership, but will they hold their nerve? Betfred’s Frank Monkhouse previews the game below.
Rangers welcome Ross County to Ibrox on Wednesday as the home team plays its game in hand over current Premiership leaders Celtic. The locals enter just three points off the pace set by last season’s treble winners as Philippe Clement continues to unravel the mess left behind by previous boss Michael Beale. A win would move them level on points with their Old Firm rivals, while three or more goals sends them to the top.
All the talk pre-match focuses on Rangers and their quest for a comfortable win, allowing Ross County to slip into the iconic Govan venue almost unnoticed. The team from Dingwall is second from the bottom of the league and face an increasing threat of being relegated to the Championship come the final tally. County are the underdogs intent on spoiling the party.
Rangers vs Ross County Match Odds
Here, we have an in-form team pushing hard for the top of the league and a title that seemed almost impossible just a few months ago. Clement’s arrival gave the Gers a new lease of life, and they’re back in the mix following five wins on the bounce. They've collected a maximum of 15 points since suffering a narrow defeat at Celtic Park earlier this year.
Ross County is fighting for its survival in the top-flight of Scottish football and know they must improve and fast, despite holding a six-point advantage over bottom club Livingston. The visitors could move to within two points of St Johnstone and safety with a win in Govan, but their recent form of four wins and a draw makes them almost impossible to trust. A Rangers win is 1/14 at Betfred to collect a 20th win of the season in 25 games, or you can back Ross County at 22/1. Stuck on the fence here? Why not try the draw at 9/1?
Rangers -1 handicap @ 3/10
Rangers had a chance to go top last Tuesday when hosting Aberdeen. They won the game but failed to score the three or more goals needed to leapfrog the current leaders. Clement spoke of the importance of gaining three points, making the win his main priority while ignoring the goals required. He’ll take a similar view here, but you’d fancy Rangers to turn on the style against an opponent with the second-worst defence in the Premiership.
In their previous 23 games this season, Ross County has conceded 38 goals, including two against Rangers at Dingwall back in August. Goals from Kemar Roofe and James Tavernier won the points that day, with both scoring inside the opening 26 minutes of play. This current Rangers team is much stronger in attack and should improve on that 2-0 victory. Back the home team -1 goal on the handicap.
Fabio Silva to score first @ 10/3
A January arrival from English Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fabio Silva isn’t yet up to full speed, but he’s certainly heading in the right direction. The young Portuguese attacker is improving with every game and has already bagged a debut goal for the Light Blues, scoring the opener in a recent 3-0 win over Livingston at this venue.
After Wolves paid a reported £35 million to bring the 21-year-old from Porto to the West Midlands, Silva has had successful loan spells at Anderlecht and PSV. He now has his sights set on firing Rangers to the title and has spoken of how he quickly settled in Glasgow under Clement. He has the quality to supercharge the Gers attack, and we’ll back him to score the opening goal on a critical night for his manager.
