PSV vs Union Saint-Gilloise Prediction: A big test for two in-form sides

PSV Eindhoven get their Uefa Champions League campaign underway when they welcome Union Saint-Gilloise to Philips Stadium on Tuesday (17:45, TNT Sports 2) in the league phase.

The reigning Eredivisie champions have started the new season in fine form, with four wins from their opening five matches. Their visitors head into this clash unbeaten in the Belgian Pro League, sitting top of the table with five wins from seven games. The hosts are missing summer signing Alasanne Plea and Wessel Kuhn for this contest owing to knee injuries. Full-back Mauro Junior is currently recuperating from an ankle issue and he looks set to miss out again.

Defender Ryan Flamingo is expected to step in to start here after replacing Armando Obispo, who suffered a head injury, in their victory over NEC on Saturday.

After impressing on his first start for the club last time out, scoring two goals, Ricardo Pepi is likely to lead the line for the Boeren once again, and he's likely to be supported by the experienced Ivan Perisic and Ruben van Bommel in the final third.

Van Bommel is the Boeren's leading goalscorer so far this season with three in five. Life at PSV has started brightly for the 21-year-old winger, who made the switch from AZ Alkmaar in the summer for approximately £13.8m.

This is going to be his first taste of Champions League action but given how well he has fared in his new colours to date, I think he can play a key role in this opening contest.

The wide man gained valuable European experience last season with AZ in the Uefa Europa League, finishing the campaign with three goals in five appearances - a respectable return.

He is surrounded by better attacking players at his new club, though, and this should help bring the best out of him as he continues his development. USG will be a tough nut to crack defensively, as they have only three goals so far in their domestic league, however, Van Bommel possesses the individual quality to unlock a stubborn back line and I'm backing him to get on the scoresheet.
