Sunderland have had a superb start to life back in the Premier League and they currently sit fourth having picked up 18 points from their opening 10 fixtures. Arsenal lead the way and are now the favourites to win the title, but this will be a tough test as they visit the Stadium of Light (17:30, Sky Sports Main Event).

Below you can find my Sunderland vs Arsenal Stats-Based Bet Builder Tips.

Arsenal to win

I simply have to back Arsenal to win at the minute, and that won’t come as much of a surprise. They’ve now won their last eight games in a row without conceding a goal, and Mikel Arteta’s men have now won 10 games on the bounce in all competitions.

It really does feel like their year, and I wrote how they are now favourites to win not only the Premier League, but the Champions League as well. Injuries could come back to haunt them, but you have to go with the form book at this current moment in time.

Football Odds

Under 2.5 goals

Viktor Gyokeres is out injured along with Martin Odegaard so the Arsenal are slightly limited in what they can do going forward. This selection though, is all about that defence. Eight clean sheets in a row is a remarkable achievement and I think they will keep it up against newly-promoted Sunderland.

Under 2.5 goals pushes our odds up, with this being a successful pick in six of the last eight Arsenal games, and six of the last seven Sunderland outings. Should be a tight game.

Sunderland vs Arsenal Bet Builder Stats

  • Arsenal have won their last 10 games in a row
  • Arsenal have kept eight clean sheets in a row
  • Mikel Merino scored twice last time out

Mikel Merino to score

“No news, we remain the same and nobody new that can join the squad so all the same,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference. That means Gyokeres is out of action and therefore it will once again fall to Mikel Merino to lead the line with Kai Havertz still sidelined.

He did it expertly against Slavia Prague, scoring twice in the 3-0 midweek success, and I expect him to pose an aerial threat for Sunderland’s back line. Arsenal clearly now play better with a physical presence up top, whether that be Gyokeres or Merino, so Arteta trust the man who scored seven PL goals last term to deliver again.

Sunderland vs Arsenal Odds

Granit Xhaka carded

I think the former Arsenal captain is going to be charging around the pitch like a raging bull, desperate to make an impression against his former club. Having been booed off as captain at one point at the Emirates, he eventually won the Arsenal fans back before departing for Bayer Leverkusen.

Still one of the best in Europe, he’s picked up three yellows in the league this term, and it just feels right that he will be involved in a flash point at some time during the 90 minutes. This takes our Bet Builder to 20/1.
