The 2024/25 Premier League season gets underway on Friday and right now you might be scratching your head over who to back to win it. Right now there are two standout candidates in reigning champions Manchester City and Arsenal.
Below, I assess both their chances for the crown this year, along with a few of the teams behind them in the Premier League winner odds market.

Manchester City @ 6/5
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have done something never been done in the Premier League before, win the title in four successive seasons. It's fair to say the neutrals are quite bored of their dominance now, but the Cityzens most definitely aren't.
It's for this reason that they are perceived as the favourites once again, but they have the 115 charges against them surrounding financial breaches from the Premier League, of which the hearing will begin next month.
If the most serious charges against them stand, City could be relegated from the top-flight, while a heavy points deduction and transfer ban could also be on the cards. These factors make backing them this season more difficult, because there is so much that can change with this story between now and the end of the campaign.
They have made one signing so far, winger Savinho from Troyes, while Argentine key attacker Julian Alvarez has departed for Atletico Madrid. Guardiola is still left with a lot of his star men, namely Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne.
They will be vital once again if City are to collect another Premier League title, and it will take something special to deny them another.
Arsenal @ 7/4
Their closest challengers look to be Arsenal once again, who have pushed them all the way in the last two campaigns. Mikel Arteta and his players will be hoping third time's the charm as they seek their first league title in over 20 years.
There is no denying that they are a very good team, and that they and City are currently a cut above the rest in the Premier League. Their forward line of Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli is going to be crucial for them once again if they are to dethrone Guardiola's men in 2024/25.
The Gunners let themselves down at times last year which ultimately saw them miss out on the crown again. The standout game was the home defeat to Aston Villa, and there was also their little wobble over the festive period. Having lost the title race by two points, that was crushing.
Arteta has bolstered his ranks with another top defender in Riccardo Calafiori, who had an excellent year with Bologna in 2023/24. He will fit in nicely with the excellent defenders they have already in William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White.
Declan Rice will be more settled in north London too after an impressive first year at the Emirates, and he will have an even bigger role to play this year you would imagine.
I thought Arsenal would go and win the league last year but it wasn't to be. My faith in them hasn't wavered this time around and they are my pick to win the league this term.
Liverpool @ 7/1
There's a new era on Merseyside. Jurgen Klopp is gone, and his successor, Arne Slot, certainly has huge shoes to fill. The Dutchman arrives having won a couple of trophies with Feyenoord, as well as guiding them to a European final, but no one is expecting him to deliver instant success.
Like Klopp's appointment back in 2015, it will be about building for the future and it feels as though this campaign will very much be laying down some solid foundations, but who's to say that he might not have an instant impact at Anfield.
Fans have been quite agitated over the summer at the lack of transfer activity, with the new boss not having made a single addition yet. Granted he has inherited a squad full of very good players, but you'd think in his first window he would be able to put his own stamp on the team. There has been no lack of trying, The Reds tried to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, but it was the player himself who rejected the move.
With the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai as attacking options, Liverpool will be expected to finish at the top end of the table, but whether they can match Man City and Arsenal remains to be seen. I'd be hesitant to back them in this title race.
Chelsea @ 16/1
Had Chelsea headed into the new season with Mauricio Pochettino at the helm, I'd have thought they could push for the top four I still wouldn't have had them as title contenders. He left at the end of the campaign and the Blues turned to Enzo Maresca, who just won the Championship with Leicester City, to take them forward.
It was a bold move for both parties because Chelsea have gone through many managers in recent years, and Maresca's success with Leicester is his only accomplishment of note as a coach. It appears as though owners Clearlake just wanted to go down the former assistant to Guardiola approach, like Arsenal did with Arteta.
Despite winning the Championship, some Leicester fans were critical of Maresca's style throughout the season, which is why I'm concerned that he won't last the season, particularly if they have a slow start. The team were making great progress in the final weeks of the previous season, and that momentum has been evaporated with the managerial change, so like Liverpool, it looks like this year will mainly be about laying foundations.
Manchester United @ 20/1
Another one who I'm not expecting to win the league but could still have a good year, is Manchester United. After their FA Cup final triumph over Man City, Erik ten Hag managed to keep his job at Old Trafford after an overall disappointing season. The Red Devils finished eighth and the Dutchman looked destined for the exit door as his style looked unclear and his in-game management was lacking.
Yet, they looked really good in the FA Cup final, which showed glimpses of what he wants from his team, now they just need to find consistency, and on his part needs to make better decisions in matches.
They have had a positive transfer window so far with Leny Yoro (Lille), Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich), Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna) and Noussair Mazraoui (Bayern Munich) joining the squad. They all should add to United's current lineup, and there is a feeling that United can return to the top four this year.
These players have the quality to help the Red Devils compete for the Premier League crown in a few years, just not now in my opinion.
