Plymouth vs Hull

After a gruelling first 45 games of the 2023/24 EFL Championship season, it all comes down to the final day for both Plymouth Argyle and Hull City, who clash at Home Park on Saturday (KO, 12:30) with their respective objectives hanging in the balance.

The hosts must at least match Birmingham City's result against Norwich City to preserve their second-tier status, while the visitors require a win and results elsewhere to go in their favour as they hunt a play-off spot. Read below for my Plymouth vs Hull prediction, where I have also noted all the latest team news and match odds.

Plymouth vs Hull Betting Tips

  • Over 3.5 goals @ 7/4
  • Morgan Whittaker anytime goalscorer @ 15/8

Team News

Plymouth will be without striker Mikel Miller again on Saturday, as the striker continues to recover from injury.

The visitors, meanwhile, are missing on-loan Burnley forward Anass Zaroury for a sixth consecutive game due to a groin issue.

Match Odds

Plymouth are 11/5 to get the victory they need to guarantee their survival, which gives them an implied win probability of 31.3%, while Hull can be backed at 1/1 (50%), and the draw at 12/5.

Both teams to score is 8/15 and a repeat of the 1-1 scoreline in September's reverse fixture is 13/2.

Over 3.5 goals @ 7/4

I struggle to see anything but goals on Saturday, despite Plymouth blanking in their last two games.

The Pilgrims were unable to breach the defence of either Stoke City or Millwall but 58 Championship goals, more than 11 other clubs, highlights their usual levels of potency.

Only Ipswich Town (18) and Norwich City (16) have been involved in more matches with over 3.5 goals than Plymouth (14), and their next opponents, Hull, have seen five of their last seven games - including their most recent two - finish with at least four goals.

Six scored in their last two matches - against very good sides in Ipswich and Coventry City (three apiece) - is no real surprise when you consider the quality they possess in attack, with Fabio Carvalho, Ozan Tufan, Liam Delap and Jaden Philogene all on at least eight league goals this term.

Hull require a win to stand a chance of making the play-offs, so they will be going all out for the three points, and even if they go in front, you wouldn't bank on them being able to hold onto a lead.

Plymouth may well need to win themselves to secure safety, so we could see plenty of goalmouth action on Saturday.

Over 3.5 goals in Plymouth vs Hull at 7-4

Morgan Whittaker anytime goalscorer @ 15/8

The goals have started to dry up for Morgan Whittaker, who failed to find the net in all six of Plymouth's matches in April.

The 23-year-old had scored two in three prior to this barren run, and he needs just one more to hit 20 Championship goals for the season.

I'm backing goals at Home Park this weekend, and it's the opportune time for Whittaker to get back in the goals and give the Pilgrims a chance of survival.

He registered three shot attempts against the Tigers in September's reverse fixture, hitting the target with one of those efforts, and he hasn't been shy to try his luck during his six-game goalless run, having 23 shots across that period.

For me, 15/8 is value enough to throw some weight behind a Whittaker resurgence in front of goal on Saturday.
