Peru and Chile will likely be battling it out for second in Group A at the 2024 Copa America after being drawn in a section with world champions Argentina, who will be confident of topping the pool.

Canada are the other team in the group and both La Roja and Los Incas will fancy their chances over the Canucks, making this first game arguably a must-win for the pair as they seek the initiative in the hunt for second. The AT&T Stadium in Texas is the venue for what promises to be an intriguing clash on Saturday (01:00), and one in which Chile look likely to prevail.

Copa America 2024 Odds

Team News

Peru boss Jorge Fossati favours a 3-5-2 system as he places an emphasis on defence due to a lack of quality, usually leaving Cagliari striker Gianluca Lapadula with very few chances up front.

CSKA Moscow winger Victor Davila scored two goals in Chile’s 3-0 warm-up win over Paraguay and he should keep his place on the right wing of Ricardo Gareca’s 4-2-3-1 system.

Eduardo Vargas was preferred to Ben Brereton Diaz at striker in that game and should continue to lead the line, with Alexis Sanchez playing just off the former QPR man.

Peru vs Chile Odds

Chile will in Texas as even-money favourites, with Peru 11/4 and the draw available at 2/1.

Copa America ties tend to be low-scoring so it is no surprise to see over 2.5 goals chalked up at 6/4, and given Peru’s troubles finding the net of late it is no great shock to see both teams to score priced up at odds-against, 11/10 to be exact.

Chile to win @ 1/1

La Roja have won just three of their last 10 matches, but there have been some positive signs throughout that tricky run, including a valiant effort in a 3-2 defeat to France, the joint-favourites for Euro 2024.

A 3-0 warm-up win over Paraguay was a step in the right direction for Gareca’s men and they should still be too strong for Canada and Peru in this section, as they can demonstrate with a win over the latter on Saturday.

Peru have endured a miserable World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign, taking just two points from an available 18 and scoring just one goal in that time,

A 0-0 draw with Paraguay and a 1-0 win over El Salvador in Los Incas’ two warm-up games have done little to suggest they have improved either, and they could struggle greatly against Chile.

La Roja have better players than their opponents, with attacking options including Sanchez, Brereton Diaz and Vargas capable of hurting any side, and they can make it a winning start to the 2024 Copa America this weekend.

Chile to win at 1/1 Chile to win 2-0 @ 15/2

A win for Chile seems very likely, and it could prove to be a comfortable one too.

Peru’s last three losses have come by a 2-0 scoreline and they have been struggling for goals for a long while now, blanking in eight of their last 14 games.

La Roja can be hard to break down, as shown by five clean sheets in their last eight matches, and given their attacking talent and the fact that the last meeting between the pair in October finished 2-0 to Chile, it could pay to back Gareca’s men to repeat the trick on Saturday.
