HBF Park Perth scaled

With five games remaining of the 2023/24 Australian A-League Men's campaign, Perth Glory are in real danger of receiving the dreaded 'wooden spoon'. Alen Stajcic's side are currently 10th, just two points ahead of bottom club Western United, and face a tough test on Wednesday (KO, 11:45) against fifth-placed Sydney FC.

Ahead of this midweek match at HBF Park we have taken a look at all the latest team news and match odds, and offered our Perth Glory vs Sydney FC prediction.

Perth Glory vs Sydney FC Betting Tips

  • Sydney FC to win and both teams to score @ 15/8
  • Over 3.5 goals @ 11/10

Team News

The Glory still have Aleksandar Susnjar sidelined through injury but there are no new absentees from their 2-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory on Sunday.

Changes are likely though, with Joshua Rawlins, Mustafa Amini, Jarrod Carluccio and David Williams all pushing for starts after substitute appearances in Melbourne.

Sydney FC have added two players to an extended 20-man squad for Wednesday, with Jack Rodwell and Matthew Scarcella both included, but two must be omitted on matchday. Rodwell looks certain to be one with head coach Ufuk Talay confirming on Tuesday that the former England international hasn't even travelled to Perth.

Pat Wood and Joe Lacey remain out injured.

Match Odds

Perth Glory are 13/5 - or a 27.8% chance - to return to winning ways at HBF Park after three games without a victory there, while Sydney FC can be backed at 4/5, implying they have a 55.6% chance of picking up all three points.

The draw, meanwhile, is available at 11/4 and you can get odds of 4/9 for both teams to score.

Sydney FC to win and both teams to score @ 15/8

The Glory looked to made themselves outside contenders for the finals at the end of February after a six-game unbeaten streak which included three victories.

However, since the start of March they have failed to pick up a single win, losing three out of four and drawing the other 2-2 against fellow strugglers Newcastle Jets.

The same can't be said for Sydney FC, who have lost just once in their last 10, picking up 19 points in the process. Such form has propelled them into the top six, where they currently reside in fifth, four points ahead of seventh-placed Melbourne City who have played a game more.

The Sky Blues bounced back from a 2-1 defeat to leaders Wellington Phoenix before the international break by beating the Nix's title rivals Central Coast Mariners 2-0 last weekend, and that should give them confidence heading into Wednesday's contest.

They also have an impressive record in Perth having won over half (14/27) of their away games against the Glory, who haven't beaten their opponents at HBF Park since January 2019.

Sydney FC's extra quality should prove too much for the hosts, but Stajcic's side can at least get themselves on the scoresheet. The visitors haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their seven away games in 2024, while the Glory have only failed to score once at home this season (0-0 v Wellington Phoenix).

Over 3.5 goals @ 11/10

There's a pretty simple explanation for this one - it's usually a pretty lively affair at HBF Park, with plenty of goals to be found. In fact, Perth Glory's 11 home matches this season have produced 44 goals - 23 for and 21 against - which averages at exactly four per game, enough to land the above selection.

Sydney FC's away contests only fall narrowly short of that total, too, with their 11 seeing 42 goals equally split.

The sides have already thrown up a thriller this season, with Sydney FC winning the reverse fixture 3-2 in December, and their previous two meetings in 2023 also produced at least four goals (four in a 2-2 draw at HBF Park in January and five as Sydney FC won 4-1 last April).
