Motherwell look to bounce back to winning ways following a shock loss to Dundee at this venue last weekend. The Steelmen started round nine of the Premiership season holding their own in the top six, boasting four wins from their last six league starts. They know wins over the champions don’t come easily, but take confidence from home advantage and Celtic’s punishing schedule.
Celtic lost their 100% record last weekend when held to a home draw by Aberdeen. Brendan Rodgers’ team remain joint-top of the Premiership, level on 22 points with the Dons and six clear of the chasing pack.
The Hoops impressed on Wednesday when earning a share of the spoils against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League and now target a timely return to winning ways. Could we see some tired legs in the visiting camp, or is Celtic ready to land an eighth win in nine league starts?
Motherwell enter as one of the division’s form teams after collecting 12 of the last 18 points available. Stuart Kettlewell’s men scored back-to-back wins over St Mirren at this venue and Hibs in the capital before a narrow defeat to Dundee last time.
They also have a Scottish League Cup semi-final against the holders to look forward to early next month. Can they warm up for that game against Rangers with a win over Celtic? The locals are as big as 9/1 on the Betfred website and app.
Celtic upset the odds when leaving Italy with an unexpected Champions League point in midweek. They rode their luck at times but proved they can compete at the top table and deserve credit for bouncing back from a crushing 7-1 defeat in Dortmund earlier this month.
The Hoops are top of the league, are unbeaten in eight starts, and remain the red-hot favourites to defend their title. An away win is 1/4, with the draw trading at 11/2.
When we turn these prices into implied odds, it indicates that our traders believe the away side have a 80% chance of taking all three points. The draw is rated as a 15% shot. Backing the home win has a 10% expectation of coming good.
Both teams to score
Our first of two picks from Fir Park see us back both teams to score at odds of 8/11. There’s enough in that price to follow it as a single, but it’ll do a better job in your weekend accumulators. Ticking “Yes” in the both teams to score column would’ve landed you a profit in each of the last five meetings, and that’s enough to catch our attention.
Celtic won 3-1 when last in North Lanarkshire. They shared a four-goal draw with Aberdeen last weekend after beating Ross County 2-1 in Dingwall and losing 7-1 in Germany. Motherwell suffered that 1-0 defeat against Dundee but did beat Dundee Utd, St Mirren, and Hibs 2-1 after losing to Aberdeen by the same scoreline. Interestingly, both teams have scored in six of Well’s last seven games in all competitions.

Motherwell 1-2 Celtic
After backing goals at Fir Park, it’s worth pushing our luck a little further and shooting for a correct score winner. Backing Motherwell 1-2 Celtic will give followers a crack at odds of 15/2, and that’s enough to brighten up your Sunday afternoon viewing. We’ve celebrated some cracking correct score winners in the Scottish Premiership already this season, and it’s the perfect time to try for another.
Backing 2-1 would’ve landed you a healthy profit in two of the last five renewals of this fixture, with both landing at Fir Park. 2-1 was the final score in five of Motherwell’s previous six games, while we remember Celtic scored two goals in recent games against Aberdeen, Ross County, and Hearts.
