Aami park melbourne scaled

With Western Sydney Wanderers still reeling from a second Sydney derby defeat of the season last weekend, a Saturday (06:00, TNT Sports 2) clash with Melbourne City, who thrashed them 7-0 at AAMI Park in March before winning 2-1 at CommBank Stadium the following month, probably doesn't represent an ideal fixture for most supporters.

But the Wanderers must face up to reality at AAMI Park and should be encouraged by facing a side that could be rusty after last playing on November 10. Read on for my Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers prediction, complete with all the latest team news and match odds.

Melbourne City vs Western Sydney Wanderers Betting Tips

  • First Half Total Goals 2-Way - Over 1.5 @ 5/4
  • Anytime Goalscorer - Zach Sapsford (WSW) @ 100/30

Team News

The big news for Melbourne City is that club captain Aziz Behich is back from a two-game suspension served for a misdemeanour in the October 26 Melbourne derby defeat to Melbourne Victory (1-3). Nathaniel Atkison has deputised at left-back but could move back to a midfield position to make way for Behich.

Arion Sulemani is also back in Aurelio Vidmar's squad after two games out injured.

However, Andrew Nabbout, Max Caputo, Marco Tilio, Alessandro Lopane and Jayden Necovski all remain in the treatment room for the three-time Premiership winners.

Football Odds

Western Sydney Wanderers are still without injured 21-year-old forward Aidan Simmons, who hasn't featured since a 1-1 draw with Western United on October 27.

Meanwhile, South Korean defender Jeong Tae-wook, who has played the duration of the Wanderers' first five ALM matches, has been ruled out with an issue of his own.

Jack Clisby could replace the 27-year-old, although there may need to be a reshuffle of the backline with Clisby preferring to play at left-back.

Further up the field, questions have continued to be asked of marquee signing Juan Mata, who has been left out of Alen Stajcic's last two starting XIs, leading the Spanish star's agent to question the manager's team selection earlier this week. The Wanderers head coach's response was fierce. He said: "I think he's got a bit too much oxygen, to be honest.

"I don't need to talk to agents when their players aren't playing, to be honest.

"I think his comments were out of order, they were cowardly and cowardly for a number of reasons.

"I've only spoken to him two or three times in my life."

Safe to say Mata's agent hasn't convinced Stajcic to start him on Saturday, although the former Perth Glory boss has labelled the former Chelsea and Manchester United ace an "important player".

Melbourne City are 8/11 to complete November with a 100 per cent record having beaten Western United 1-0 and Perth Glory 5-0 in the first half of the month. Those odds give Vidmar's side an implied win probability of 57.9%, while the Wanderers are 3/1, or a 25% chance, to return to winning ways after losing 4-2 to Sydney in last weekend's 'Unite round' at Allianz Stadium.

The draw is priced at 13/5, both teams to score at 8/15, and over 2.5 total goals at 4/7.

Yonatan Cohen scored his first Melbourne City goal in the demolition of Perth Glory on November 10 and is 6/4 favourite to net against the Wanderers, who have Marcus Antonsson (9/4) and Brandon Borrello (23/10) first up in the anytime goalscorer market.

First Half Total Goals 2-Way - Over 1.5 @ 5/4

The Wanderers' first halves have been full of goals this month. There were four first-half strikes in their 4-3 defeat to Adelaide United at CommBank Stadium - one for them, three for the visitors - and two in their 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle Jets at the same venue - both scored by WSW.

There were two again last week as the Sydney sides went into the interval at 1-1 before the Sky Blues ran away with the derby in the second half, running out 4-2 winners at Allianz Stadium.

Melbourne City also saw two goals scored in the first half of their most recent game, the 5-0 hammering of Perth Glory on November 10. Meanwhile, in the Melbourne derby on October 26, there were three strikes - all by Melbourne Victory - who held a commanding lead at the interval before conceding once in the second half to win 3-1.

The last two meetings between Melbourne City and the Wanderers have seen at least two goals scored in the first half, with the former putting four past their opponents in the opening half of March's 7-0 demolition job. City were also the only scorers in the first 45 minutes at CommBank Stadium the following month, with Leo Natel and Marin Jakolis putting the visitors into a 2-0 lead before the hosts netted a consolation in the second half.

Heading into round six of the 2024/25 ALM season, no side can match the Wanderers' goal tally of 11, but only Perth Glory (16) have conceded more times than WSW (12). Those statistics mark them out as one of the most entertaining teams to watch and they usually bring about a guarantee of goals, so I like 5/4 for over 1.5 first-half total strikes on Saturday.

Anytime Goalscorer - Zach Sapsford (WSW) @ 100/30

Wanderers forward Zac Sapsford only scored twice in 12 ALM appearances last season but has matched that tally in his first four games this term, netting in back-to-back starts against Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC. The 22-year-old was also on target in the Australia Cup on August 27 as his side thrashed Queensland Lions 4-0 in Brisbane.

His two goals this month should certainly be enough for him to keep his starting spot this weekend ahead of the likes of Mata, who currently appears ill-suited to the Wanderers' system.

Breaching Melbourne City's backline appears to be a difficult task for anybody at the moment with Vidmar's side keeping three clean sheets so far, shutting out the Jets, Western United and Perth Glory. However, those three sides all finished in the bottom three last season and the Wanderers should provide a much sterner examination of their defensive credentials this weekend as the division's top scorers.

Sapsford should take confidence from his recent strikes, particularly in the Sydney derby, and at 100/30, I think he's well worth taking on to net anytime at AAMI Park.
