Are Manchester City finally reaching the end of the most remarkable era of dominance the Premier League has ever seen? Or are Pep Guardiola’s men just lulling us into a false sense of security before going on their usual New Year tear?

Man City vs Sheffield Utd Betting Tips

  • Manchester City Total Goals - Over 4.5 @ 11/4
  • Julian Alvarez To Score First @ 3/1

The truth is, playing 20th-placed Sheffield United probably won’t reveal a great deal about where City are at right now. The Blades have won just one of their five games since re-appointing former manager Chris Wilder. They have deserved more at times, such as when Aston Villa struck in the 97th minute to deny them a 1-0 win. But on other occasions, such as a 3-2 loss to fellow strugglers Luton Town on Boxing Day in which they scored two late own goals, United have been their own worst enemy.

Therefore City are expected to enact a drubbing here, even if they have won just two of their last five games. Even when operating beneath the lofty peak of their powers, Guardiola’s men usually deal with these situations with the requisite aplomb.

Team News:

The big miss for Manchester City will be without world class forward Erling Haaland. Speaking to Prime Video, Guardiola confirmed, "He feels better with his bone [in his foot] but he hasn’t had one training session with us.” The United match will be the seventh game Haaland has missed with the injury.

City will also be without Kevin de Bruyne and Jeremy Doku, who are sidelined with muscle issues. John Stones and Ruben Dias are also doubts for the Saturday fixture.

Match Odds:

Sheffield United fans might want to look away now, because their side are a mammoth 28/1 to beat the reigning champions. A slightly more plausible draw is 10/1, but football really is a two-horse race. Stranger things have happened than a Blades victory so why not go big?

City are a prohibitive 1/14 to do what they do best at the Etihad Stadium. A price reflective of their lofty reputation and of United’s poor season.

Manchester City Total Goals - Over 4.5 @ 11/4

Sheffield United have conceded five to Arsenal and Burnley this season as well as eight against Newcastle United. They did hold City to just two in a 2-1 defeat in August. But that was a different side under a different manager. The Blades have found it tough going since, with that early-season optimism well and truly having evaporated.

It is against this backdrop that City can rain goals on their struggling opposition. Even without Haaland, this team is full of goal threat. Which brings us nicely onto our next bet.

Julian Alvarez To Score First @ 3/1

Ably filling the Haaland-shaped void in the City side is Julian Alvarez. The 4-0 Club World Cup victory over Fluminense was bookended by goals from the Argentina international. He also netted from the spot in City’s previous game, a 3-1 win over Everton.

With Haaland absent, Alvarez will be the focus of City’s potent attack. With Sheffield United vulnerable at the back, you’d be shocked to see him come away from the Etihad without a goal.
