A three-way race for two European spots in the Premier League is emerging between Manchester United, Newcastle United and Chelsea, and the former two go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Wednesday night (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event) in their penultimate games of the 2023/24 campaign.

Read below for my Man United vs Newcastle prediction, alongside all the latest team news and match odds heading into the crunch midweek clash.

Man United vs Newcastle Betting Tips

  • Newcastle to win & both teams to score @ 11/5
  • Anthony Gordon anytime goalscorer @ 9/5

Man United could hardly be in a worse state heading into Wednesday's game. The Red Devils have suffered back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace (0-4) and Arsenal (0-1) and have won just one of their last eight matches in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag's side have been pulled down to eighth, three points behind Newcastle (sixth) and Chelsea (seventh), and they are only two points ahead of ninth-placed West Ham United.

There's more much positivity on Tyneside as a run of just one defeat in Newcastle's last eight games has put them in pole position to qualify for the Europa League, though they warmed up for Wednesday with a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Team News

Where to start with these two teams and their injury lists? I'd be here all day naming every player from each side who is currently struck down by some sort of issue.

The biggest absentees on the home side are Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Mason Mount, while there are question marks over the availability of Lisandro Martinez, Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo.

Sandro Tonali is still suspended for Newcastle, who have the likes of Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Joe Willock on the sidelines.

There are big question marks over the fitness of Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson, both of whom missed Saturday's draw with the Seagulls.

Nick Pope has been named on the substitute bench for the past two games and will be itching to get some minutes under his belt before Gareth Southgate names his England squad for Euro 2024.

Man United vs Newcastle Odds

The hosts are 13/8 to revive their European ambitions and pick up all three points on Wednesday, giving them an implied win probability of 38.1%, while Newcastle are 11/8, or a 42.1% chance to triumph and secure a top-seven spot. The draw, meanwhile, can be backed at 3/1.

Both teams to score is 2/7, over 3.5 goals is 4/5, and it's 16/1 for a repeat of December's 1-0 scoreline in Newcastle's favour.

Newcastle to win & both teams to score @ 11/5

Newcastle have already beaten Man United twice this season, 3-0 at Old Trafford in the League Cup in November, and the aforementioned 1-0 victory over the Red Devils at St James' Park just over a month later.

Eddie Howe's side will seriously fancy their chances of recording a historic hat-trick over the Red Devils to ensure they finish above them in the Premier League.

Injuries are crippling this Man United side, as evidenced in the centre-back pairing of 36-year-old Jonny Evans, relegated with Leicester City last season, and 32-year-old midfielder Casemiro, that has started their last two games.

It's easy to imagine the damage Newcastle striker Alexander Isak could do to that duo on Wednesday, while Bruno Guimaraes should be able to pull the strings in midfield against Kobbie Mainoo, Sofyan Amrabat and Scott McTominay.

I successfully backed the Red Devils to lose to nil against Arsenal on Sunday, but I do think they can grab a goal against the Magpies, who haven't kept a clean sheet in their last four matches, and just two in their last nine in the Premier League.

Newcastle to beat Man United & both teams to score at 11-5

Anthony Gordon anytime goalscorer @ 9/5

Anthony Gordon was the hero for Newcastle the last time these sides met in December, as the England international scored the only goal of the game in the 55th minute.

The 23-year-old has continued to excel for the Magpies and has established himself as a man for the big occasions, netting past every top-eight team - bar his own side - in the league, including Manchester City and Liverpool.

One thing that can be levelled against him is the fact that only one of his 10 Premier League goals this term have come away from home, and that was at Bramall Lane against bottom club Sheffield United in an 8-0 routing of the Blades in September.

However, Old Trafford is the perfect place for Gordon to end his barren run on the road.

Just like Man Utd, the grand old stadium is falling apart, as evidenced by the water cascading down from the roof after Sunday's defeat against Arsenal, and Gordon can cause further damage in midweek.
