Liverpool Premier League Odds: Wirtz the key as Reds look to retain title

Liverpool broke Manchester City's four-year Premier League dominance in some style, streaking to title glory and ending the 2024/25 campaign 13 points ahead of the dethroned champions, and 10 points better off than runners-up Arsenal.
The challenge for Arne Slot now is to make the Reds back-to-back league winners for the first time since 1983/84 under Joe Fagan. So, can they do it? Below are Betfred's Liverpool Premier League Odds for the upcoming season, as well as a prediction on how the Merseyside club will fare after a busy summer transfer window.

Prediction: 1st
Liverpool ended the last campaign with 84 points, but that hardly does their brilliance in 2024/25 justice as they wrapped up the title with a 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur on April 27, and with nothing left on the line, failed to win any of their last four games (D2, L2).
Slot oversaw a sensational debut campaign at Anfield, and despite losing Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, among others, from his squad this summer, the Reds head into Friday's opening match against AFC Bournemouth in better shape than they ended the last season.
Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez are Slot's new full-backs, while Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike bring plenty of creativity and firepower in attack.
There's more business to be done, particularly in defence, but the Reds look primed for another title challenge, at the very least.

Transfer Business:
In: Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong (both Bayer Leverkusen), Hugo Ekitike (Eintracht Frankfurt), Milos Kerkez (AFC Bournemouth), Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia), Armin Pecsi (Puskas Akademia), Freddie Woodman (Preston North End), Will Wright (Salford City).
Out: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid), Luis Diaz (Bayern Munich), Darwin Nunez (Al-Hilal), Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford), Tyler Morton (Olympique Lyonnais), Nathaniel Phillips (West Bromwich Albion), Owen Beck (loan, Derby County), Harvey Davies (loan, Crawley Town), Vitezslav Jaros (Ajax).
Key Player: Florian Wirtz
Mohamed Salah won the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker awards last season, scoring 29 goals and registering 18 assists, and the Egyptian, even at the grand old age of 33, is again expected to play a key role for the Reds in 2025/26.
But I'm looking at Wirtz, brought in for a British record transfer fee from Germany, as someone who can come in and lessen the load on Salah.
At Bayer Leverkusen, the 22-year-old established himself as one of Europe's most exciting young stars, inspiring Leverkusen to a treble in the 2023/24 season.
The German international starred again in 2024/25, scoring 10 times and laying on another 14 for teammates in the Bundesliga, but he was always destined to move to one of the continent's biggest clubs, and it was Liverpool who won the race for his signature this summer.
Much of the Reds' creativity last season came from the right-hand side, but with Alexander-Arnold now sunning himself in Madrid, Salah needs more help, and Wirtz should provide more than adequate support.
Prediction: 1st
Man City should be much stronger this year, with reigning Ballon d'Or holder Rodri back from a long-term injury, adding to a reinvigorated squad.
Last season's runners-up, Arsenal, have made big moves in the transfer market, too, notably signing Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres, and no side will be more motivated to win the title than the Gunners.
But I just can't see past the Reds, who haven't sat still, either. Wirtz, Ekitike and Kerkez are all upgrades on those that have come before them, while Frimpong is as good a replacement at right-back as you'll find.
Plus, Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, who was second to Salah in the Golden Boot race last season, appears set for a move to Merseyside, and should Slot snare him from the Magpies, it's hard to back against them retaining the title.
