If Liverpool want to give Jurgen Klopp his dream send off in Dublin, they need to make it to the Europa League final. The next step on that journey is a two-legged quarter-final tie against Italian outfit Atalanta, with the first leg at Anfield on Thursday night (20:00, TNT Sports).

The Reds missed a bucket-load of chances at Old Trafford as they dropped two points in the Premier League title race, a result that saw them surrender top spot to Arsenal. However now they turn their attention back to Europe, as Atalanta come to town. Here is my Liverpool vs Atalanta prediction, featuring team news and a couple of betting tips.

Liverpool vs Atalanta Tips

  • Liverpool -1 handicap @ 5/6
  • Correct score: Liverpool 3-0 Atalanta @ 8/1

Team News

Jurgen Klopp will be boosted by the impending return of Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota all of whom are back in training this week, but it’s unlikely any of the trio make the match day squad for Thursday.

As such, Caoimhin Kelleher will continue in goal with Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson expected to compete for the full-back spots. Ibrahima Konate could join Virgil van Dijk at centre-back after Jarell Quansah was preferred against Man United.

In midfield, Curtis Jones is expected to make a first start since February 17, with Dominic Szoboszlai most at risk of dropping to the bench, while Harvey Elliott staked a claim for a starting berth with another impressive substitute cameo on Sunday.

Up front, Cody Gakpo could get the nod ahead of Darwin Nunez as Klopp looks to manage the minutes of his front three, who were profligate at Old Trafford.

Atalanta are missing young centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, who has a hamstring issue that is likely to keep him out of both legs here. Reportedly on Manchester United’s radar, he could have a big future in the game, and the Italians are struggling to replace him.

Meanwhile Charles De Ketelaere made his return against Cagliari, meaning that Gian Piero Gasperini has a full quote of players available - minus Scalvini. Teun Koopmeiners is one to keep an eye on and could be a future Liverpool player, as a creative midfielder who recently confirmed he has asked to leave the club.

Match Odds

Liverpool are the clear favourites to win this game, priced at 3/10 to win the first leg. That gives them an implied win probability of 77%, which shows how fancied they are here. Atalanta are 8/1 to cause a shock at Anfield, while a draw can be backed at 9/2. BTTS is 8/11 and over 2.5 goals is 4/9

Liverpool -1 handicap @ 5/6

Liverpool are one of the finest sides in Europe, and truly should be in the Champions League. However, they find themselves in this competition, and now have their sights set on winning the whole thing. That day in Dublin will be the mother of all farewell parties for Klopp, but his side have to get there. Fortunately, they’ve been handed an easier draw than expected at this stage, as they face an Atalanta side who are struggling for form.

They sit 6th in Serie A, but have dropped off in recent months, and have won just once of their past six league matches. They beat Sporting CP to reach this stage, winning 3-2 on aggregate, but going to Anfield is likely to prove too much for a side that have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine matches in all competitions. With Liverpool’s attacking vibrancy, they should be able to overcome a -1 handicap to boost our odds further.

Correct score: Liverpool 3-0 Atalanta @ 8/1

Let’s try and nail a correct score here. Liverpool are going to dominate this match, and even if they make changes, with the likes of Gakpo, Elliott and Jones likely to feature heavily, they should have the quality to dismantle Atalanta at will.

Klopp will want his charges to put this game to bed early on, rendering the second leg almost pointless before the trip to Italy next week, I can see them scoring three goals without reply, as I feel Atalanta will struggle to land a significant blow on this Liverpool defence. The goals they conceded at Old Trafford were ludicrous one way or another, and with the return of Konate, they should be solid at the back. 8/1 for the 3-0 win feels about right.
