Champions league ball scaled

Shelbourne head to Windsor Park on Wednesday (19:45 BST, BBC iPlayer) for the second leg of their Uefa Champions League first-round qualifier against Linfield. The Shels have a 1-0 lead heading into this clash, which Linfield will be hoping they can overcome on home soil.

It's Belfast vs Dublin for a place in the next round and this is expected to be another close encounter. Read on for my Linfield vs Shelbourne predictions, accompanied by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Linfield will be without midfielder Alex Rodriguez as the result of an injury to the Spaniard. Sean Brown, who joined the club after leaving Larne in the summer, was not handed his debut in the first leg, and he will be pushing to make his first appearance for the Northern Irish champions on Wednesday.

With not much transfer business taking place at Windsor Park over the summer, boss David Healy is set to field a similar XI that took to the field in Dublin, with that match being a tight affair, with just the one goal scored.

Healy and his players will look to striker Matt Fitzpatrick for inspiration, with the front man netting 12 goals in the league last season.

Linfield vs Shelbourne Stats

  • Shelbourne have drawn three of their last four away trips in all competitions
  • Both teams have scored in three of Shelbourne's past four fixtures

Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien named an unchanged side in the first leg from the one that beat Cork in the league a few days earlier, and it is unlikely that many alterations will be made for the trip to Belfast, with his side only holding a one-goal lead.

Top scorer Mipo Odubeko is the man in form for the reigning LOI champions, with his strike making it three consecutive games in which he has found the net. He will lead the line for the Reds, hoping to inspire his team into the next round.

O'Brien has no fresh injury concerns to worry about, which will give him and his side a huge boost ahead of Wednesday's fixture.

Linfield vs Shelbourne Odds

Linfield are 6/4 to win this game in 90 minutes, and they have won three of their previous seven competitive matches.

The stalemate is marketed at 21/10 (implied probability of 32.3%), which has been a winning selection in three of Shelbourne's past four away trips in all competitions. The Reds are 8/5 to prevail in regulation time and they have won their last two games heading into Wednesday.

Draw @ 21/10

Shelbourne's domestic title defence may be going badly, but they have a chance to focus on something else in the Champions League, which would be far more lucrative for the Irish outfit than winning the LOI.

Of course it's still early days in qualifying but the prestige and money this competition offers them is huge for a club of their size - it has to be a priority. It's the same for Linfield and this second leg is expected to be played as such.

Shels are mid-season, meaning they are much sharper than their hosts, who are preparing for their new campaign. However, Shelbourne have not had the best time of it in 2025 so far, and they have found wins on the road hard to come by.

Three of their last four away trips in all competitions have ended in a stalemate, and for that reason, I think a draw in regulation time could be a smart play on Wednesday.

Linfield have the home advantage and have work to do to overcome the one-goal deficit. They may have the home advantage but the lack of match practice may prevent them from getting the victory.

Linfield vs Shelbourne - Match Result Draw

Both teams to score @ 5/6

Linfield may not be as up to scratch physically as their southern visitors but I think they will have a role to play in this match, and I think the desperation to progress from both teams will lead to chances at both ends of the pitch.

I think BTTS could be a shrewd selection for the second leg as both teams have found the net in three of Shelbourne's last four outings in all competitions, while this has been a successful bet in three of Linfield's past seven competitive fixtures.

They both have forwards who are no strangers to finding the net, and this could lead to a frantic game of football at Windsor Park.
