Lazio were the biggest surprise of the Champions League thanks to their hard fought 1-0 win over Bayern Munich that keeps the qualification to the quarter-finals open.

A couple hours before Maurizio Sarri’s men heroic performance against the German champions, Bologna confirmed they’re living a great moment by beating Fiorentina 2-0.

It was another display full of aggression, courage and plenty of attacks by Thiago Motta’s men who now have got the same points as Atalanta and five more than Lazio, but with a game in hand.

The Rossoblu have made the most of their last three home games, but their hopes to qualify for next year’s Champions League will depend on their away form.

Despite often dominating games (Bologna are second for ball possession in Serie A), the Felsinei still lack the ability to kill opponents off and have only won once on the road this season (2-1 at Salerno).

Between now and May they’ll travel to Bergamo, Rome to face the Giallorossi, as well as Napoli and Torino for the match against the Granata.

Lazio, on the other hand, have only lost two of the last 11 games and have shown once again that they can well manage the tight margins in games.

As expected they happily left the ball to Bayern, as they did in other occasions playing in Europe, and made the most of their counter-attacks.

Lazio enjoyed Bayern players’ lack of connection and thanks to their combative spirit nullified the gap in terms of squad value and talent.

It was arguably their greatest European night so far, built on one of the simplest, yet effective, principles of Italian football: defence and quick transitions.

This season Lazio are far from being a high scoring side, they have the 11th attack in Serie A and are in the bottom three for shots, but their reactive approach, especially against top sides, has been paying off.

Team News

Lazio are without two important players, defender Romagnoli and midfielder Vecino both suspended. Rovella and Zaccagni are not in perfect physical conditions and might start on the bench. Maurizio Sarri might also decide to give Ciro Immobile a rest and begin the game with Castellanos up front. Cataldi should play in the middle, with Patric and Gila forming the centre-back pair.

The visitors are without Frueler (suspended), who’ll be replaced by Aebischer. Fabbian is in contention with Moro for a start. Up front Zirkzee will be supported by Orsolini (three goals in the last two games), Ferguson and Saelemakers. Calafiori, who missed the midweek game against Fiorentina, should be fit to start.

Match Odds

Despite Bologna being ahead in the table, Lazio are still favourite (5/4) to win on Sunday. Lazio are unbeaten in 18 of their last 21 Serie A matches against the Rossoblu, and this season they’ve only lost two games at home (against Genoa and Inter).

The odds for the draw are 21/10, a good option considering that Bologna have already shared the points away from home in seven occasions this season.

If you fancy some trivia the visitors are unbeaten in their last five league matches played on Sunday lunchtime, having won four and drawn one.

Lazio is also Bologna’s favourite victim in Italy’s top flight as they’ve scored 188 goals against the team from the capital. A win for the visitors pays 5/2

It’s no surprise the Under 2.5 goals pays 8/15. In fact Lazio’s home games this season have produced only 19 goals (the second worse record behind Torino).

Bologna have kept a clean sheet in four of their last six matches against Lazio but average just a goal per game away from home. The odds for the Over 2.5 goals are 11/8

A game like the one Lazio played on Wednesday inevitably has short-term consequences in terms of physical and mental energies.

Although it’s true that teams that win football matches often don’t feel the fatigue, keeping up with Bologna’s pressing and high volume of attacks will demand another big effort from Maurizio Sarri’s men.

Seven of Bologna's last eight away games in Serie A have ended with Both Teams To Score as a winning bet, but Lazio have kept 10 clean sheets this season in all competitions.

Bologna have failed to win nine of their last ten Serie A away games, and Lazio are unbeaten in nine of their last ten league games in front of their crowd.

Half-time result: draw @ 19/20

Curiously Lazio have played at the Stadio Olimpico after every mid-week Champions League game.

But, despite this home advantage, they’re results have been patchy: they have scored more than one goal only in one occasion and taken the lead in the first half in only three matches (against Monza, Atalanta and Cagliari).

Bologna have drawn 11 games after the first 45 minutes, seven of which away from home.

Three of their nine Serie A draws this season have ended goalless.

Hal-time result: draw at 19/20
