Ipswich vs West Ham Prediction: Irons can end the season on a high

Ipswich Town will play their final Premier League match of the season at Portman Road, as they entertain West Ham United on Sunday (16:00). The Tractor Boys have known about their relegation for a while and they will try to end a disappointing campaign on a high.

The same goes for West Ham, who themselves haven't had the best of seasons. The Irons can only finish as high as 14th on Sunday, a long way from their consistent finishes in the top eight in recent memory. Ipswich are sweating over the fitness of Conor Townsend, who is reportedly edging closer to a return to action from a hamstring problem.

There could be a place in the Tractor Boys squad for Sammie Szmodics, who has been sidelined since February with an ankle injury.

Kalvin Phillips suffered a foot injury at the beginning of May and is unlikely to feature again this season, bringing to an end his loan in East Anglia.

Chiedozie Ogbene (Achilles), Wes Burns (knee) and Arijanet Muric (shoulder) are also unavailable for the Tractor Boys.

West Ham remain without the services of long-term absentees Crysencio Summerville and Michail Antonio, due to hamstring and leg injuries respectively.

There are a number of Hammers stars who will be hoping to feature for the final time in claret and blue, including Vladimir Coufal, Aaron Cresswell and Lukasz Fabianski.

Boss Graham Potter could be tempted to deploy.a stronger attacking team than the one that were beaten by Nottingham Forest last time out, with Niclas Fullkrug and Lucas Paqueta pushing for starts.

Top scorer Jarrod Bowen will continue to lead the line, and the Irons may be braced for interest in the Englishman in the summer transfer window.

West Ham have drawn four of their past nine outings in the top flight and the stalemate is available at 3/1. The Irons have won one of their last three matches, which came at Manchester United, but they thrashed the Tractor Boys 4-1 back in October at the London Stadium.

The Hammers are 5/4, which has an implied probability of 44.4%, to collect the three points.

It's been a forgettable campaign for West Ham, but one they hope they can improve on after work in the summer. The jury is still out on Potter as it's still unknown if he is going to be the best fit in the dugout for the Irons.

It's clear that he needs squad additions designed to play his style of football, so we're probably looking at a a few months into next season to judge his progress - but he needs backing from the board.

They have the chance to end their campaign on a high as Ipswich have been poor at home throughout the season. The Tractor Boys have lost each of their past eight home league contests heading into Sunday, while they are winless in their latest seven appearances.

Confidence has been on the floor for Ipswich for a long time and this is something that I think West Ham can profit from, despite this game being a dead rubber. The Hammers have the attacking quality to punish one of the worst defences in the division (79 goals conceded), but theirs isn't much better (61), which is why I think both teams will get on the scoresheet in this clash - which was the case when they met back in October.

This man has been West Ham's main man for the last few years now but as the team has begun to regress, he could be contemplating his future as it's clear he has the talent to play for a side battling higher up the table.

Bowen has 12 goals in the top flight this term, including one against Ipswich in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign. The England international heads into Sunday with five goals in his previous seven appearances, including each of his last three.

His latest goal was a cracking volley against Forest which he set up himself with a deft touch, further highlighting his technical quality. I think he will demonstrate this at Portman Road by adding another goal to his tally.
