Ipswich Town face Manchester United in a Premier League match for the first time since 2002, and the Tractor Boys are at the heart of the biggest story in football this weekend as Ruben Amorim makes his bow as the new United manager.

To help you stay informed and be able to pick the best selections ahead of Sunday’s clash, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of Ipswich Town vs Manchester United Stats which you can find below.

Ipswich Town vs Manchester United Stats

  • Ipswich are 18th in the form table
  • Man Utd are 13th in the form table
  • Ipswich BTTS  - 73%
  • Man Utd BTTS - 36%

Form Guide

Manchester United are currently 13th in the Premier League table and 13th in the form table, having won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six matches. They’ve scored seven and conceded seven in that time frame, while Ipswich rank 18th over the last six matches.

They have won one, drawn two and lost three in recent weeks, but they did record their first top-flight victory of the campaign last time out against Tottenham Hotspur. Goals from Sammie Szmodics and the in-form Liam Delap were enough to get them over the line, while Manchester United also enjoyed three points, as Ruud van Nistelrooy led them to a 3-0 win over Leicester City.

However, Ipswich are the only side without a Premier League win at home this season (P5 D3 L2). Only five newly-promoted sides have failed to win any of their opening six home matches of a campaign in the division, and all five went on to be relegated. Ominous stuff.

Head-to-head

Their last league meeting may have come back in 2002, but Ipswich and Man Utd have met 55 times throughout their history. United have 27 wins to their name, there have been nine draws, and Ipswich have won 19 - so it is perhaps more even than you would expect.

Their first clash came back in 1958 as United won 2-0 in the FA Cup, while their most recent meeting was in 2015, as the Red Devils secured a 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the League Cup.  Wayne Rooney, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial were the scorers that day.

Goals

Statistically, it’s not been great for Ipswich so far this season. The Tractor Boys have had the fewest shots (108), shots on target (33), touches in the opposition's box (199) and expected goals (10.2) of any side in the 2024-25 Premier League.

They do have a weapon in the form of Liam Delap however. He has scored six of their 12 league goals this season and is one of only two other players in the league to have scored more than half of their team’s goals this season. Chris Wood and Erling Haaland are the others.

Ipswich Town vs Manchester United - Anytime Goalscorer Liam Delap

Odds correct at time of publishing.

In terms of goals, Manchester United have also been missing a standout forward this season. In fact, Alejandro Garnacho is their top scorer with three league goals to his name and Bruno Fernandes is the only other player with more than one.

United have scored 12 and conceded 12 in their 11 matches so far, and that will be a key issue for Ruben Amorim to address in his new 3-4-3 formation. Over 2.5 goals has come in during 64 per cent of United’s matches this season, while that figure stands at 45 per cent for Ipswich Town, who is relatively low given their goalscoring exploits in the Championship last term.

In terms of BTTS, Man Utd have the joint-lowest figure in the league alongside Liverpool, with only four of their 11 fixtures so far ending with both teams on the scoresheet. Ipswich on the other hand are near the top, having seen the net bulge at both ends eight times already.

Corners

It’s difficult to judge how United will play under their new Portuguese manager, but so far this season they have also ranked poorly for corners. They are averaging 9.4 total corners per match, 5.4 for and 3.9 against, which puts them fourth from bottom in terms of corners.

Meanwhile, their hosts Ipswich are also ranking below the average of 11.1, at 10.4. That’s more than United, but perhaps it is worth considering backing there to be under a certain number of corners at Portman Road on Sunday afternoon. Having said that, I am slightly concerned about United’s new manager bounce.

Cards

United have picked up the third-highest number of yellow cards in the Premier League this season, while the one red card they have been given sees them rank third from bottom in the fair play table. With Casemiro in midfield and Bruno Fernandes as feisty as ever, they are a decent shout to pick up a couple of yellows,

Meanwhile Ipswich have 31 yellows so this could turn into a dirty encounter on Sunday and I’m be minded to back a decent number of cards and ill-discipline in this one. The Tractor Boys have also picked up two red cards to date which puts them fourth from bottom in the fair play table. Anthony Taylor is in charge so bring on the cards!

Shots on Target

Man Utd have had 57 shots on target this season in total, and Garnacho leads the way with 13 to his name. Fernandes is second with seven, followed by Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee on six and perhaps surprisingly, Matthijs de Ligt on five. We will have to keep an eye on Amorim’s possible team selection, but de Ligt provides the value here for me.

For Town, it is perhaps unsurprising that their star striker Delap leads the way for shots on target, having racked up nine - while Szmodics has six and Omari Hutchinson have five. I’d be looking at either Delap or Szmodics for the home side, if you do fancy them to put a new-look United under pressure.
