The party that started three weeks ago with the victory in the derby, will likely continue for Inter during and after this match.

But Lazio, who have still have a slim chance to qualify for next year’s Champions League, certainly will want to spoil the celebrations. Because, believe it or not, Italy might qualify up to six clubs to Europe’s top competition next season.

In order to play in the Champions League, Lazio needs to win the remaining two games of the season and hope that Atalanta will beat Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final.

If the Bergamaschi manage to inflict Xabi Alonso’s men their campaign’s first defeat and won’t finish in the top four positions in Serie A, then Italy will take six clubs to next season’s Champions League.

It sounds like fantasy for a team that sacked their manager no longer than three months ago, but Lazio, who host Sassuolo on matchday 38, must travel to San Siro believing such a miracle is achievable.

Certainly Lazio’s fortunes have turned since the change on the bench.

Under Igor Tudor the Biancocelesti have obtained 16 points (same as Inter Milan) in seven games, thanks to four wins at the ‘Olimpico’ as well as four clean sheets.

After being knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, Lazio’s results have mirrored the ones from 2022/2023 after they were eliminated from the Conference League.

In fact last season they won 10 of the last 12 games and, surprisingly, finished as runners up.

Inter have already beaten Lazio twice this term, in the league (2-0 for Simone Inzaghi’s men at the ‘Stadio Olimpico’) and in the Supercoppa Italiana (a 3-0 win in Riyadh in the semi-final).

The Nerazurri probably won’t approach this game with the same mindset as they did earlier in the year, but in front of their fans and against a top opponent you could expect them to bring their A-game.

Motivations can play a big part during a football match and surely, in this case, the visitors should have more than Inter. But in 2024 Lazio have only won four of the thirteen matches they played against top sides including European and domestic cups.

Inter themselves are chasing a couple of records. If they win both remaining games they’ll end up with 98 points (one more than what they achieved in 2006/2007), and need four more goals to beat their 2020/2021 season tally (89 goals) under Antonio Conte.

Team News:

Thuram or Sanchez will play alongside Lautaro Martinez. Pavard and Bastoni will return in defence, with de Vrij confirmed in the middle. Acerbi should also be available after he missed the last two games due to injury. Dimarco and Carlos Augusto are in contention for a start as left wing-back, Dumfries should get the nod to play on the opposite flank. Asllani will be the playmaker, and Frattesi could replace Barella.

Tudor is thinking about switching to a back three. Lazio will be without defender Romagnoli (suspended) and Casale will replace him. Patric and Hysaj will be the other two defenders. Provedel is fully recovered, but Mandas is likely to be confirmed in goal. Marusic and Lazzari will be the wing-backs with Guendouzi and Kamada operating in the middle.

Up front, Ciro Immobile will be supported by Zaccagni and Felipe Anderson. Luis Alberto is expected to start on the bench.

Inter are of course favourite (4/6) to win the match, having already beaten Lazio twice this season without conceding. The hosts have won all the last four games at San Siro against the Laziali with an aggregate score of 9-3.

This season Inter have only dropped nine points at home and have the best attack (43 goals) and third best defence (10).

The odds for the draw are 3/1 as Lazio have only shared the points twice this season away from home. However two of the last four Inter’s home games have ended in a draw (against Napoli and Cagliari).

The away win pays 4/1, the visitors have won four of their last seven games on the road, but have lost all their away matches against Italy’s other top five sides with an aggregate score of 9-2.

Seven of Inter’s 18 Serie A matches have produced four or more goals as the Over 2.5 Goals pays 4/6. Higher odds (11/10) for the Under 2.5 Goals considering both teams have scored in seven of the last eight Serie A meetings.

Inter win and Under 3.5 Goals @ 11/8

Under Tudor Lazio are playing at a higher intensity, and only failed to score in two out of nine games, but some of the limits of the squad, and in particular the difficulty at creating clear cut chances, are still evident.

The Biancocelesti have Italy’s seventh-best attack on the road, and they’ve only scored twice in the five matches played against teams occupying the first six positions of the table.

Inter have kept 21 clean sheets and are just one short from equalling the all-time record in Serie A currently held by AC Milan (1993/1994) and Juventus (2013/2014, 2015/2016 and 2017/2018).

Both Teams To Score – No @ 1/1

Lately Lazio’s results have improved, however their fixtures list in the last month has not been tough, as they faced six teams in the bottom half of the table.

On the other hand Inter have lost just one game at home and have never failed to score apart from the 0-0 against Real Sociedad.

They’ve netted more than one goal on 14 occasions, including six of the last seven games, with the only exception being the 1-1 draw against Napoli.

Inter have been so dominant at home that they have managed to take the lead in the first half in 16 (88%) of their domestic league games so far.

Lazio have kept only three clean sheets in their last 13 games on the road, and two of them came against Empoli and Torino, who have the worse home attacking records in Serie A.
