Hull City only just missed out on the play-offs last season, and have made some pretty big changes this summer. Liam Rosenior has been replaced by Tim Walter, as owner Ali Acun Ilicali strives to get them back into the Premier League.

However, looking ahead to this season they don’t seem to be as strong as they were last term. Below I’ve taken a look at Hull City Championship Odds, as I take a look at what the Tigers could achieve in 2024/25.

A quick look at Hull’s outgoings tells you all you need to know. They’ve lost their two best players from last season in the form of Jaden Philogene and Jacob Greaves, and while they have made massive profit on them both, you simply cannot find players of that quality very easily.

Those two have both got moves to the Premier League, which speaks volumes of their ability, but it also feels like Hull went all-out for promotion last term, in the strongest Championship we’ve ever seen. The top four teams were setting records at the top, and it was always going to be a struggle for anybody else to match them, as both Norwich and West Brom found out in the play-offs.

So when Hull brought in the likes of Fabio Carvalho, Anass Zaroury, Scott Twine, Liam Delap and Tyler Morton - all on loan - it felt like short-term thinking without the possibility of long-term success. They have managed to sign Ryan Giles on a permanent deal and Cody Drameh has arrived from Leeds, but aside from that, it has been very quiet on Humberside.

Football Odds

It isn’t just the high number of outgoings, but the quality that has gone out the door which troubles me when we think about Hull’s prospects this season. The sacking of Rosenior due to the failure to make the top six seems bizarre at this moment, with Tim Walter now the head coach. The German failed to take Hamburger SV back to the top flight and joins Hull with mixed reviews. It’s certainly too early to suggest he will be an upgrade of Rosenior, especially with the squad he has at his disposal.

So we’ve got an untested manager in English football, in charge of a squad that has been decimated over the summer. The only reason I don’t have them in the relegation mix-up this term is because they have generated a lot of revenue this summer, and I believe a portion of that will be spent on new players.

Ilicali has flitted between transfer policies since taking ownership of Hull, relying heavily on Turkish players when he first joined. Then he plumped for a British manager with big-name loan signings and now, an experienced German will lead them into the 2023/24 campaign. Unfortunately for Hull, it feels like the tail is wagging the dog right now, with no real long-term plan for success in place. The names being brought into the club, and the manager, just don't seem to match up.

They gambled last season, irresponsibly, and now they have an awful lot of work to do to get them back into the top half of the table. I can see a serious season of regression on the horizon, with relegation an outside probability if recruitment doesn’t go well over the month of August. Serious work is needed before the window closes, otherwise even their predicted finish of 17th, may well be beyond them.
