Huddersfield Town vs Manchester United U21 Prediction: Terriers to take out young Devils

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is now in situ and, with a record of developing players, he may have an eye on the Red Devils’ under-21's’ trip to Huddersfield in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday (19:45). 

With Doncaster already guaranteed progress to the knockout rounds and Barnsley eliminated, Huddersfield and United U21 are battling out to join Rovers in the next stage - the young visitors are second on five points, with the third-placed Terriers on three. 

Michael Duff's men must win to progress but, while they have other priorities as they chase promotion from League One, they have taken this competition seriously. 

They have lost 2-1 at Doncaster and beaten Barnsley 2-0 but they are in genuinely good form, with the sole defeat in their last seven games being a shock 1-0 FA Cup reverse at Tamworth. 

United U21 have been great fun to watch, triumphing 3-2 at Oakwell and drawing 3-3 against Doncaster before winning on penalties, suggesting goals could be on the cards in Huddersfield.  

It would be a real achievement for the youngsters to make it through, but they lost their last game 5-2 at Sunderland and could be on the wrong end of an entertaining encounter on Tuesday.

Duff has tended to select strong teams in this competition and, with no game at the weekend due to international call-ups, he may want to give his first-choice players more minutes again.  

Although this might also be a good chance for Freddie Ladapo to build his confidence. The former Rotherham man scored in last month's win over Barnsley and could partner Rhys Healey, who netted off the bench in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Crawley, up front. 

Among the United starlets expected to be on show is left-back Harry Amass, who has been part of the first-team picture this season. 

Attacking midfielder Jack Fletcher should also start. The playmaker, the son of former United midfielder and current coaching team member Darren, has scored twice in this tournament.

Both teams to score has landed in one of the Terriers' EFL Trophy games and both of United's fixtures and is 4/6, while after a 3-2 win at Barnsley and 3-3 at Doncaster, over 3.5 goals is a live chance at 10/11.

Huddersfield's League One position is compromised by their poor away record, which has seen them fail to win their last four on the road, but they have been predominantly excellent at home, winning five of their seven clashes at John Smith's Stadium. 

United's youngsters were impressive on the road before the defeat to the Black Cats and they have been entertaining to watch, netting two or more goals in each of their last 10 away games. 

Both teams to score has been a winning bet in nine of those matches and could be the case in Kirklees on Tuesday, albeit in a losing cause for the visitors. 

Over 4.5 goals @ 2/1

Being so attacking can prove problematic and while they are unbeaten in the EFL Trophy this season, United U21 could be picked off, and in style. 

Five or more goals have been netted in both of their EFL Trophy matches, so backing over 4.5 at a big price of 2/1 could prove fruitful.
