After suffering a surprising and disappointing group stage exit at the last Uefa European Under-21 Championship in 2023, Germany Under-21s will be hoping for drastic improvement in Slovakia this summer. They begin their campaign in Group B against Slovenia Under-21s in Nitra on Thursday (20:00).

Die U21 are the joint-favourites with Spain to go all the way in this tournament at 4/1 with Betfred and many seem to fancy their chances this year. Read on for my Germany U21 vs Slovenia U21 predictions, featuring the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Germany's early exit two years ago did feel like an anomaly. After all, they have reached the final in three of the last four editions, emerging as champions on two occasions. Antonio Di Salvo's side will be out to make a point in Slovakia this summer.

There are some notable names in Die Mannschaft's ranks which is likely why they are being so heavily favoured to go all the way. Nick Woltemade is probably the player to watch over the course of the tournament. The 23-year-old has just had an impressive Bundesliga campaign with VfB Stuttgart, netting 12 goals in the top flight as well as winning the DFB-Pokal.

Mainz 05 winger Paul Nebel is going to pose a threat from out wide, having bagged 10 goals and four assists in the league this term. Borussia Monchengladbach's Rocco Reitz and Brighton & Hove Albion's Brajan Gruda are two other players to watch for Germany over the next few weeks.

Germany U21 vs Slovenia U21 Stats

  • Germany U21 won eight of their 10 qualifying matches
  • Nick Woltemade (GER) has seven goals in 13 appearances for the U21s

Slovenia are likely going to look to midfielder Tio Cipot (Spezia) for inspiration at the Euros as he is the leading marksman in the squad with eight goals to his name.

Goalkeeper Martin Turk is the most experienced player in the squad with 23 caps, while Svit Seslar (18), Cipot, Zan Jevsenak and Tjas Begic (all 16) are the established regulars within Slovenia's ranks.

Germany U21 vs Slovenia U21 Odds

As the joint-favourites to win the Euros, as well as the fact that they won eight of their 10 qualifiers, Germany are 2/5 favourites here. You can get better value by backing them to win to nil, which they have managed in two of their past three victories, at 13/8 (which has an implied probability of 38.1%).

Two of their previous five games have ended in a stalemate, which is marketed at 18/5 for Thursday's clash.

Slovenia are 11/2 to stun Die U21 but they have lost just one of their last eight matches.

Both teams to score has been a winning selection in four of Germany's past six outings and BTTS is on offer at 8/13 here.

Germany U21 and over 2.5 goals @ 9/10

Germany are out for revenge after their humiliating group stage exit two years ago and you can expect Di Salvo and his players to be fired up for their Group B opener. As the favourites, they are expected to get through Group B but it won't be easy. They are up against defending champions England, while Thursday's opponents Slovenia head into this tournament in good form.

Die Mannschaft have a lot of quality in their ranks and I expect this will shine through in this contest. In Woltemade, they have a proficient scorer for club and country. The Stuttgart star has seven goals in 13 appearances for the U21s and he also netted 12 goals in the Bundesliga in 2024/25.

Fellow forward Nicolo Tresoldi has five goals in 11 outings for Die U21 and he will also have a role to play for Di Salvo's side over the course of this tournament. This is going to be a tricky first game for Germany as Slovenia have lost just one of their last eight fixtures, but I think Die Mannschaft will rise to the challenge and we will see the talent they have to offer.

To improve the odds, I have added over 2.5 goals to a Germany win because there have been three or more goals in seven of their past eight games in all competitions, and Slovenia's form may just make this a close encounter.

Nick Woltemade anytime goalscorer @ 5/6

You've probably already guessed that I am a fan of this man given how much he has been mentioned in the preview already, but I think it's warranted. I believe Woltemade is going to be one of the stars to watch at the Euros and if Germany are bidding to reclaim their status as European champions, I think he will play a key role in making that a reality.

He has a good return for Die U21 with seven goals in 12 matches but what's more impressive is him bagging 12 goals in the Bundesliga this season with Stuttgart, with another five coming in the DFB-Pokal, which he won with Die Roten.

That winning tournament experience at a senior level should serve him well in Slovakia over the next few weeks, and I think he would be a smart pick for the Golden Boot winner.
