Football bet of the day

Before the season started, many people were predicting Hull City and Charlton Athletic to struggle in the Championship. At the time of writing, the two clubs sit seventh and fifth respectively.

They collide at the MKM Stadium on Saturday (15:00), with both sides bidding to keep their winning streaks going. I think this could be an entertaining affair and so this is the contest from which my Football Bet of the Day comes.

Football Bet of the Day - Saturday, October 25

  • Both teams to score and over 3.5 goals @ 14/5

Hull vs Charlton Odds

Hull have won their last three league games and they are 6/4 to extend their streak to four matches.

Charlton have triumphed in their past two Championship fixtures and they are 15/8 to come away with the three points. The draw is marketed at 11/5.

Hull forward Oli McBurnie has netted six goals in the league and he is the 13/8 favourite to score anytime on Saturday.

In their last three games, Hull have taken down Sheffield United, ended Birmingham City's unbeaten home record dating back to April 2024, and beaten Leicester City.

That's a run of games that should give them plenty of confidence ahead of their clash with Charlton, but the Addicks will also likely have a good feeling about this game. They have just beaten Ipswich Town 3-0 at Portman Road so they won't be fazed heading to Hull despite the hosts' excellent form.

Both teams are in good shape ahead of this encounter and I think it best to steer clear from a result-based selection as I do think this will be tough to call. Although, I did go with a 3-2 victory for Charlton in our Championship Predictions column.

However, I am confident that this contest will provide goals, and so that is the base of Saturday's Bet of the Day.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • No side has been involved in more games featuring over 3.5 goals than Hull (six) in the league
  • BTTS has landed in 73% of the Tigers' Championship matches (8/11)

The market that has caught my attention is both teams to score and over 3.5 goals at 14/5 (implied probability of 26.3%) because when it comes to the hosts, they have been involved in quite a number of high-scoring matches in the Championship this term.

No team has been involved in games featuring at least four goals than the Tigers (six), which amounts to 55% of their 11 fixtures to date. This includes three of their six home encounters in which two of them saw Hull score three goals against Oxford United and Southampton.

The other was a 2-2 stalemate with Preston North End. It's also worth noting that all three of these home clashes featuring over 3.5 goals also included BTTS, which does make this selection that much more appealing for Saturday.

You may seem doubtful when just one of Charlton's Championship appearances this season has gone over 3.5 goals, but that did come on their travels when they lost to Queens Park Rangers.

BTTS has been slightly more common for the Addicks than over 3.5 goals, landing in four of their 11 games so far, but I still think this selection is of value for their trip to Humberside.

Mainly because the stats are working in Hull's favour, especially when they play at home. But what is also worth noting is the fact that only league leaders Coventry City (31) have scored more goals in the Championship than the Tigers (19) this campaign.

And while they have been effective going forward, they remain vulnerable defensively as they have also conceded 19 goals - the joint-highest in the top half of the table.

Charlton have been effective going forward and they have the players to exploit any mistakes Hull make. I am going for a high-scoring spectacle on Saturday and I believe these two teams can live up to the billing.
