Sheffield Wednesday vs QPR Odds

Sheffield Wednesday defied the odds last weekend as they secured their first win of the Championship season, a win I, and certainly many others, were unsure would ever arrive in 2025/26.

It was an astonishing 2-0 scoreline, but the goals were interesting to say the least. The first was a smart Barry Bannan free-kick which caught the goalkeeper out, while the second had a touch of controversy about it. Conor Shaughnessy pulled his hamstring and went down, and the ball was picked up by George Brown who stuck it into the net.

Wednesday took all three points but the xG stat read 1.74 vs 1.04 in Pompey’s favour. We all know the off-the-field trouble has caused the Owls all sorts of issues, and they are rightly the favourites to go down given the squad that Kristan Pedersen has at his disposal.

The first XI is passable, but still has quite obvious weak points, while the bench is packed full of youngsters with barely any EFL experience. This squad is not good enough to finish anything other than bottom of the Championship this season, and that is where I expect they will end up.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Sheffield Wednesday have lost every home game so far
  • QPR have won their last three on the bounce
  • Kone has scored three goals in five matches

I’m also surprised that any team is longer than odds-on to beat Sheffield Wednesday this season, home or away. The Portsmouth result has really helped us in that sense as QPR are around 6/5 to beat them at the time of writing.

Another major point of difference for Wednesday is the contrast between their home form and their away form. Away from home, there seems to be this back against the wall mentality where the fans are completely behind the team and they can nick results. Their other point came as they fought from 2-0 down to draw at Wrexham, a game they could have won in injury time.

At home, the issues with owner Dejphon Chansiri become even more apparent. Some fans are boycotting games, other season ticket holders are going along but showing their disapproval in other ways. This weekend, the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust have organised a protest in the 10th minute, signifying the 10 years Chansiri has been in charge of the club.

Supporters will be encouraged to raise black and gold scarves, while they are also urging people to avoid purchasing anything inside the stadium during the match. Wednesday’s home results on the pitch have seen them lose 1-0 to Grimsby Town, 3-0 to Bristol City, 2-0 to Swansea City and 3-0 to Stoke, with only a penalty shootout win over Leeds United providing any form of comfort.

QPR meanwhile have looked very decent in recent weeks. Since losing 7-1 to Coventry, they’ve won their last three to fire themselves up the table, and the arrival of Richard Kone has certainly helped. The striker has scored three goals for his new club already and so our Football Bet of the Day backs the former Wycombe Wanderers striker to find the net in an away win for QPR.
