Football bet of the day

Uefa Champions League and Championship action continues into Wednesday and once again I am turning to England's second tier for my Football Bet of the Day. The game in question comes from Fratton Park as Portsmouth host Wrexham.

Both teams are in conflicting moods heading into this clash and I think there is value to be had. Check out my selection below.

Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, November 5

  • Match Result - Wrexham @ 15/8

Portsmouth vs Wrexham Odds

Portsmouth have won just two of their seven home games in the league this season but they are also without a victory in their past four outings - losing the previous three. They are 6/4 to get back to winning ways here.

The draw is valued at 11/5, with Wrexham having experienced two stalemates in their six away trips in the Championship this term.

Both teams to score has landed in 77% (10/13) of Wrexham's league fixtures this campaign, the joint-highest in the division. BTTS - Yes is valued at 4/5 for Wednesday.

The value here in my opinion lies in an away victory. Wrexham are 15/8 to collect the three points on the South Coast, and they will be fired up for this clash after becoming the first team to inflict a defeat on league leaders Coventry City on Friday night, thanks to a hat-trick from striker Kieffer Moore.

That felt like a statement win for Phil Parkinson's side, who currently sit 15th in the table. The Red Dragons have struggled for consistency following their promotion from League 1 in the summer but they are beginning to show that they can cause some damage at this level, and their latest result has fired a warning to the other 22 clubs in the Champiosnship.

Wrexham's form can be improved both at home and on the road. There is very little to separate the two right now as they have picked up nine points at the Racecourse Ground and eight on their travels.

Their away form can become their leading source for points on Wednesday when they take on Pompey at Fratton Park. John Mousinho's side are in a bit of a rut at the moment, which is partly being impacted by injuries to key players.

Portsmouth were outclassed at Birmingham City on Saturday as they lost 4-0 to the Blues. Three of the goals came from set-pieces, which I'm sure Parkinson will have paid close attention to as he was in attendance at St. Andrew's.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Wrexham beat league leaders Coventry City last time out
  • Portsmouth have lost three games in a row

His Wrexham side is full of physically big players, and so they will look to exploit Pompey's current shortcomings when it comes to defending set-pieces. Friday's hat-trick hero Moore is someone who can wreak havoc on the hosts' back line, as he bids to add to the seven league goals he has bagged already.

Portsmouth will be hoping that being back at home can help them end the run of three consecutive defeats but unlike last season, their home form has been nowhere near as strong, with just two wins from seven outings at Fratton Park.

The mood surrounding both teams ahead of Wednesday is very different and it is Wrexham who come into it in the best shape and they are the ones who will be the most confident of coming away with the three points.

This could be a huge result for the Red Dragons because they are yet to post back-to-back wins in the Championship and this is currently the best chance they have of making that happen.

Portsmouth have some real issues to sort out but I don't think they will have been sorted in the time that has passed since Saturday's thrashing against Birmingham. It looks like Mousinho and his players are in need of the next international break to reset but unfortunately I think they will be dropping some more points first.
