Football Bet of the Day: Can Mbappe continue goalscoring exploits?

We’ve got plenty of football action coming our way on Wednesday with a midweek round of Premier League fixtures and games across Europe taking place. 

We are heading to Spain for our Football Bet of the Day, where Athletic Bilbao host Real Madrid (18:00 GMT, Premier Sports 2).

Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Girona on Sunday and more dropped points in La Liga have handed the lead in the title race back to Barcelona. Los Blancos have now drawn their last three in the league, and that means that the ferocious pace they were setting at the top of the table has slowed slightly. 

Xabi Alonso’s side won 10 of their first 11 in La Liga, but they continue to perform well in the Champions League and have now won four out of five, with Arsenal at home up next. They have to try to get back to winning ways in La Liga on Wednesday night, however, but the test against Athletic Bilbao could be a tough one. 

Athletic Club sit eighth in the league, having won six, drawn two and lost six, but their home form is strong, which leaves me concerned. They’ve only conceded six home goals, winning four out of seven, but they were hammered 4-0 by Barcelona recently in Catalonia. 

Athletic Bilbao vs Real Madrid Odds

The one man who they should be frightened of is Kylian Mbappe. He’s been in sensational form this term and the numbers are just astonishing. 14 goals in 14 La Liga appearances is excellent, while his four-goal haul in the Champions League against Olympiacos took him to the top of the scoring charts with nine goals in five outings.

He scored a penalty against Girona but still he can kick on under Alonso and establish himself as the best forward in the world. He’s guaranteed to start up top with Vinicius Jr. on the left and possibly Arda Guler on the right, so there’s plenty of firepower in this Real Madrid team. 

I just think Mbappe’s numbers this season have been phenomenal and the value on him to score twice or more is there given Athletic Bilbao’s strong home record. It’s very difficult to keep a player as good as Mbappe quiet, and so our Football Bet of the Day is to back him to score 2+ goals against Athletic Bilbao at 4/1.
