Football bet of the day

Southampton's fortunes have really turned around since parting ways with Will Still a month ago. The Saints have won five of their last six Championship matches. They defeated Birmingham City at St. Mary's on Saturday and Tuesday (19:45 GMT, Sky Sports+) sees West Bromwich Albion make the trip to the south coast.

The Baggies do not have a pleasant away record and they are up against a side full of confidence. My Football Bet of the Day comes from this clash, which you can check out below.

Southampton vs West Brom Odds

With five wins from six in the league, the Saints are the 5/6 favourites to win this clash.

West Brom have drawn one of their previous three fixtures and the stalemate on this occasion is priced at 12/5. The Baggies are 11/4 to pull off an upset but they have lost five consecutive away trips in the Championship.

Due to Albion's woes on the road and the revitalisation of the Saints, I am confident that this game will end in a victory for the hosts. Their 5/6 price isn't flashy enough for me, however, so I have boosted the selection with over 2.5 goals.

Southampton have gone up a few gears in the past month. Four of their last five victories have seen them score at least three goals, which included a five-goal showing at Charlton Athletic on November 22 - with all their goals coming in the first half.

Forward Adam Armstrong, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom, has really sparked into life in recent weeks with five goals in as many matches, including a brace against Birmingham on Saturday. The striker now has nine league goals to his name which is one behind leaders Brandon Thomas-Asante, Carlton Morris and Joe Gelhardt.

Armstrong did pick up a knock in that game and his participation on Tuesday isn't guaranteed, but Saints boss Tonda Eckert has other capable attackers to share the goal burden. One in particular in Finn Azaz, a summer arrival from Middlesbrough, who has struck in each of his side's previous five outings in the second tier.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Southampton have won five of their last six league games
  • This includes three home wins on the spin
  • West Brom have lost five away game in a row
  • Saints have scored three goals in each of their past three home fixtures

The Saints are now just three points off the play-off places and nine points adrift of second-placed Middlesbrough. With the way they are starting to play, they can certainly pose a threat to Boro's automatic promotion hopes, while Ipswich Town will also look to have a say in the matter, too.

Southampton have won five from six, including three consecutive home games. Their home form is going to be very important for them to overcome their current deficit, and it just so helps that their next match at St. Mary's is a team who have lost five on the bounce away from The Hawthorns.

Albion may feel like they have turned a corner at home after their comeback victory against Swansea City the other week, but their results and performances away are still troubling.

Five defeats in a row is tough form to arrest, especially against one of the form sides in the division at this moment in time. Ryan Mason has a tough task ahead of him but even if his side play at their best, I still think it won't be enough to beat the Saints.

This contest can produce goals, with over 2.5 goals landing in three of West Brom's past four appearances in the league. But whether the Baggies contribute to scoreline remains to be seen. I'm confident the home side have enough quality to score three goals on their own as they have done on the last three occasions at St. Mary's.
