All eyes are on France vs Spain this evening, as the first semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup throws up an absolute corker of a clash. This box office blend brings together pre-tournament favourites La Roja and current incumbents Les Bleus in a festival of football.

There was nowhere else to turn for Football Bet of the Day, so strap in and see what I picked for this slice of appointment viewing.

France vs Spain Odds

This game features a veritable smorgasbord of talent. Spain waltz in with 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri anchoring their midfield. La Roja can lay claim to the most sought-after youngster in world football; Lamine Yamal, as well as a quality forward in Mikel Oyarzabal.

France’s embarrassment of riches includes assist-monster Michael Olise, the ex-Crystal Palace man who loads the bullets for Harry Kane’s shooter in the Bundesliga. Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele is performing at a level that justifies that gong. Desire Doue is the name on every fan’s lips, as the 21-year-old conjures magic on the flank.

But one name stands above all others; Kylian Mbappe. Playing in his third World Cup at the age of 27, the Real Madrid superstar is yet to play in one without reaching the final. Mbappe is yet to play in a World Cup final without scoring.

Kylian’s killer touch helped see off a spirited Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 final. But his masterpiece cruelly doomed him to leave empty-handed in 2022. Four years ago, he became only the second player after England’s Geoff Hurst to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. Mbappe even sunk his penalty in the shoot-out, but could not prevent an Argentina win, led by the irrepressible Lionel Messi.

A repeat of that instant-classic final could be in the offing, but first France must get past a richly talented Spain side. If they do, it will likely be down to Mbappe, who I’m backing to score or assist on the night at 1/1.
