Football Bet of the Day: 16/5 chance for UWCL cracker

Thursday sees the return of the Uefa Women's Champions League, and our Football Bet of the Day will focus on Manchester United Women's trip to the Spanish capital to take on Atletico Madrid Women (17:45 BST, live on Disney+).

The Red Devils began their league phase campaign with a slender victory over Valerenga, while Atleti were comfortable winners versus St. Polten last time out.

The hosts will enter Thursday's contest hoping to bounce back from a humbling 6-0 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday in Liga F, but, as mentioned in the introduction, the Spaniards did kick-off their European journey with an emphatic 6-0 win of their own on matchday one against St. Polten.

Four strikes came in the first half courtesy of Gio Garbelini, Andrea Medina, Luany and Vilde Boe Risa, before Fiamma Benitez scored a late brace to finish off the rout.

Atlei were eliminated in the qualifying stage of last season's tournament, and almost were again this year, if not for a Luany penalty in the 10th minute of stoppage time against Swedish outfit Hacken.

Now they'll be looking to respond to the aforementioned defeat to Barca, which keeps them seven points off top spot in the league, in their first European meeting against an English team since losing to Chelsea in the last 16 of the 2021/22 season.

Meanwhile, this is United's first time competing in the main draw of the UWCL and they had to navigate past PSV Eindhoven and Hammarby in single-leg ties, before they overturned a first-leg deficit to claim a 3-1 aggregate victory over Norwegian side Brann in the final stage of qualification.

Marc Skinner's side are on an unbeaten streak of seven games across all competitions, which includes recent league victories over Liverpool and Everton, as well as draws with Arsenal and Chelsea to keep them in third spot in the Women's Super League, two points adrift of the summit.

There's no doubt that United head into Thursday's tie in better form - so that's who we're backing - but we also believe there will be goals at both ends.

Atleti have scored 11 goals across their past four outings, while United have managed to net on eight occasions during that time. In addition, the Red Devils have won their past three away matches and can inflict further misery on the Spanish side here.
